Rockport Room ~ Urban Haven
Vacation Home hosted by Gary
2 Guests . 1 Bedroom . 1 Bathroom

Overview

The Rockport Room is filled with watercolors by an artist in Rockport, MA. It is upstairs with a cozy charm, full bed, western light with all the comforts for 2, AC (summer), TV/Roku. Having the rest of my home to enjoy, more of a "private room" meets an "entire home" feel, makes this a perfect getaway! The large shared bathroom is just down the stairs; there are a couple of other wonderful Airbnb guest rooms in the house. And the garden out back is perfect for relaxing including a hot tub.

I've lived in my house nearly 22 years. My guests always find a special feeling here, welcoming, relaxing, charming, a real home setting with all the amenities. Each of the guest rooms are inviting, comfortable, creative, and clean; the house is filled with personality. Guests enjoy access to the entire house (common areas), garden, and share a large bathroom on the main floor with extra, towels and a 50gal hot water.

Washer/dryer use for guests staying 7 days or more.

The dining room has a 24 hour beverage "bistro" for tea, coffee, cider, hot chocolate, snacks, etc. And cooking in the kitchen is just fine.

Outside in the garden you'll find beautiful plants, flowers, and possibly a hummingbird or two. With tranquil scenery, plenty of places to sit or lounge, accented by small water fountains and a fire pit ... it's the perfect place to relax, read, laugh, look and enjoy.

** Access is a breeze with a key pad on the front door. Late nights are fine if set up in advance; guests have always been respectful of other visitors already sleeping when coming and going.
** Dogs (only) are truly welcome! However, they need to remain with owner(s) at all times and cannot be left in guest rooms unattended. Note: If a pup is comfortable & calm being left alone (without barking or "crying"), guests must bring a crate when making plans to venture out and about without your four-legged companion.
** There is plenty of safe street parking!

The house is yours to enjoy ... glass front wood burning stove, serene gardens, piano and a wonderful stocked kitchen. You can nap in a lounge recliner out back or next to the fire inside.
I love to see my guests cooking up tasty meals; it's wonderful when guests enjoy a dinner in the dining room or on the patio.

Sometimes I'm able to be home to chat, share stories, and most of all laugh with my guests. At times I am rushing between auditions, performances, projects, social engagements, or simply creating in my craft and work room. I'm also guardian caregiver for my father, Gary Sr. who lives here as well.

This IS the location! You can see the MAX lightrail station from my front door! Interstate 5 has on/off ramps, both directions, 2 minutes away.
Walk to the awesome, hip, groovy, "Portlandia Style" Historic Mississippi District in 10 minutes. The Alberta Arts District is only a few minutes by car or bike ... for shopping, galleries, food carts, restaurants, coffee, breweries, dispensaries, and other crazy little shops. 10 minutes on MAX lightRail into downtown for everything you could want to see or do. MAX runs miles in several directions from my house to all over the PDXMetro area. There are also bike trails and paths running both north and south from the house.
And if you would rather relax and stick close to "home" check out my Guidebook. At the end of my street alone there are several restaurants (one with dozens of brews/ciders on tap), coffee and fresh bagels, wine & bottle shop, a bank and even a convenience store.

From I-5 North: take the Killingsworth/Swan Island exit (cont. over freeway to Interstate Ave and turn left, take 1st right onto Prescott St)
From I-5 South: take the Alberta/Swan Island exit (at flashing stop, turn right on Alberta to Interstate Ave and turn left, continue south past Plaid Pantry (on Going St.) to your next right, turn right onto Prescott St)
From PDX airport, train or bus stations: MAX lightrail transit, Yellow Line north to Prescott Station, walk west 1/2 block on Prescott St to 1572.
From any direction: red house on the left with the ON AIR sign in the front window :)
If driving, do not stop or park on the left side neighbors driveway. It is next to mine on the right which you are welcome to unload. There is plenty of safe & free street parking.

** The stairs are a little narrow and a tad steep compared to most ... typical old 1925 craftsman.
** In an effort to be mindful of energy use, I keep the house on the cooler side on winter days as most guests are out and about. The room has its own heater if needed and fan as well and AC (summer). In the summer it can get a little warm but the AC works great. I ask all guests to turn off lights, heaters, fans and AC when out.
** I have several guest rooms in my home. One of the coolest rewards is when guests from around the world meet each other while staying here and end up with new friends and even more memories!

Owner

Gary here... a very friendly, easy going, and welcoming fellow who truly loves the Airbnb experience both as a traveler and especially as a host to guests from around the world. My first guests arrived in November of 2013 and I've since opened my front door to over 1400 others from 25 countries. Each of my guest rooms are cozy, welcoming, and unique. I have a simple goal to provide a comfortable, special, and inviting place to call "home" when visiting our beautiful and vibrant city. My guests are welcome to enjoy a movie in front of the fire in the living room, have a candlelit dinner in the dining room, cook up a tasty meal in the kitchen, and enjoy relaxing in the hot tub & yard surrounded by fountains, flowers, greenery, and serenity.
I'm really just a renaissance man. I've worked as a high school teacher, a behavioral health therapist, small business owner, gardener, builder/thinker/crafter, and most passionately as a professional actor for 40 years, mostly in musical theatre but also on camera. ** I'm also a grateful "friend of Bill W."
I've always enjoyed meeting new people. Local theatre, music, books, restaurants, being outdoors, gardening, movies, are just a few pieces of my life (not forgetting karaoke). I also love a road trip, traveling, any "water destination" (ocean, river, lake, stream, or pool!), and enjoying the sunshine whether it's in my convertible, on a hike, diggin' in the garden, or just a walk. I do clean up quite well and can be found in a suit & tie, or even a tuxedo.
My home, URBAN HAVEN as I call it, is my castle! I share it with my two adorable pups, SeeBee & Mannie; they're really my kids. I'm also caregiver for my dad, Gary Sr., who spent a decade on the streets of Santa Cruz County until 7 years of searching led me to him. Dad is a quiet and extremely kind man enjoying our being together and grateful for his 2nd chance at life.
I take extreme pride in my simple home of 22 years. I welcome every guest with a smile and a "make yourself at home, relax & enjoy," invitation. I'm happy to give suggestions of things to do and see, let guests explore on their own, and even get suggestions from my guests about "what's new" that I haven't even seen yet myself.
I consider myself a very genuine and authentic gentleman with healthy sense of humor, with a goofy and even mildly devilish side.

My simple motto ... "the only way to true happiness & real freedom is from doing the right thing, not because you have to but because you want to!"

House Agreements • Relax & Enjoy … From comfort to cleanliness, please leave it how you found it, think of my home as a wonderful getaway, a true “home away from home” in Portland, Oregon. • ALL are Welcome… I honor every guest for who they are, regardless; it’s that simply. I ask each and every guest in my home to do the same not only for me but for each other when staying. • Sharing & Respect… My home is the perfect place to meet other guest travelers, sharing use of the common areas such as the living & dining rooms, kitchen and bath. Please be respectful of others staying. Quieter Time is from 10pm to 9am. The house being 95 yrs old the walls may seem a bit, understandable, thin to those more sensitive to sound like myself; I provide fans in every room for a little “white noise” if needed. • Bathroom… Guests share a large, bright, well situated bathroom; it works beautifully! Each guest room has a place for personal “finishing touches” while getting ready for your adventures. • Shoes… Only the 2nd floor rooms are “no shoes” with a little shoe cubby provided at the bottom of the stairs. • Pets… I have 2 wonderful little pups who enjoy other 4-legged friendly travelers that we know about in advance. Dogs only. 3 Points: 1) Well mannered & housebroken are a given and I ask that pets are never left unattended in the house unless they are used to and comfortable with being crated in the room for short periods if you are out. 2) I have a cherished garden; please keep an eye out for trampling, digging, and clean up after they do their business. 3) Male dogs must be neutered. **Please do not feed my little ones “people food.” • Parking… There is plenty of safe street parking. As with any location, don’t leave valuables in sight and lock your vehicles. Please do not park in the driveway. • Smoking… You are welcome to smoke out in the back yard. There is a covered porch when it’s raining. Marijuana (only) is legal in Oregon and ok to smoke on the property. NO other drugs! • Drinking & Responsibility… We have an abundance of incredible breweries, wines, and distilleries in Portland; feel free to enjoy them here at the house and out about town. Please drink responsibly; public transit is ½ block away, Uber, Lyft, taxi, et. Are ALL great choices! • People… If you have friends in Portland please check with me in advance if you would like them to visit the house, NO overnight additional guests. Do not give the doorcode to anyone. No parties or events unless discussed before booking. • Children… I love kids! Let me know in advance if you are traveling with a child under 8 yrs; the house isn’t suitable for toddlers due to the stairs. • Stairs… The house was built in 1925 with somewhat narrow & steep stairs to the upstairs rooms. This is simply something to keep in mind. And as is true with “old gems” there are a few squeaky boards. There are 4 stairs up to the front door and 4 off the back porch with another 2 into the yard. • My Label Maker & Laminator… I LOVE them both! =) You’ll find helpful little signs and notes all around the house making it very easy to find what you need. I have all the simple necessities from a clothing steamer to a blood pressure cuff… with most everything in between. • My Father… Gary Sr. is an incredibly kind, gentle, and caring man with a heart to match. I am his legal guardian and grateful to have finally found him and given him a home. He takes his meals in the house and uses the restroom. I ask all to be patient and understanding with dad; he’s seen and been through so much in life. He’s not the first to say hello but with always respond.
