Your property:
Welcome to Bear, a romantic lakeside studio in North Country House, our cozy mini motel. Bear has lake views from every window. It's a clean, quiet space for a couple or a solo getaway.
Inside (all private to you): queen bed with soft linens; private bathroom with the property's only bathtub; gas fireplace that runs off the wall thermostat (mid-September to May); Wi-Fi and a 55" 4K smart TV for your own streaming apps (there's no cable TV in this area).
Kitchen: refrigerator, gas stove with oven, microwave, dishwasher and a K-cup coffee maker, plus full place settings and cookware. A toaster, electric kettle and DVD player are available on request. Just message us.
Outside: your private stone patio just under the front windows, and a second private rock patio at the bottom of the stone steps with your own fire pit and charcoal grill. You walk across the Moose deck to reach your door, but the deck seating belongs to Moose.
Seasonal: air conditioning (June to mid-September); outdoor furniture (last snow to first snow); shared kayaks, paddle boards, grills and the dock (Memorial Day to Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day).
Parking: one spot for one vehicle. Extra cars or trailers go in our overflow lot (see Other details).
Guest access:
Private to Bear: the whole studio, the stone patio under your windows (table and two chairs), and the lower rock patio with your own fire pit and charcoal grill.
Shared with the other two suites: the lawn, the grass beach, the dock, the bench swing and the kayaks and paddle boards.
Kayaks & paddle boards (Memorial Day–Columbus Day): We have 4 adult kayaks, 2 children's kayaks and 2 paddle boards. They hang on the side of the deck in front of the red house. Life vests for every weight except infants are in the closet in your suite. Before you paddle, fill out the release form in your suite. If it's missing, message us for a copy. Send us a photo of the signed form, then drop it in the black mailbox on the side of the deck. Please put the boats back on the rack after use.
Your own boats: You're welcome to launch non-powered boats from the beach. No license is needed.
Swimming: The lake is natural, with a grass beach and the dock for getting in. There's no lifeguard, so swim at your own risk.
Fishing: Bass and perch are common. You'll need a valid NH fishing license. Local honor stands sell nightcrawlers in summer.
Winter (about January–March): ice fishing (with a license, following local rules), snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, with trails right from the property. If you're bringing a trailer, please tell us ahead of time.
Interaction with guests:
We're Corbie and Rob, and we live on-site with our family in the neighboring duplex. We respect your privacy, but we're always nearby if you need anything. Check-in is self-guided with a keypad, and your code is sent before arrival. Check-in is 3–9 PM. Please send all messages through Houfy messages so we can reply quickly. You're welcome to adjust the heat and AC yourself. There's no need to ask.
Other details to note:
A small mini motel: North Country House has three suites: Bear, Loon and Moose. Your suite is private. The yard, beach, dock and boats are shared, and we live on-site.
Kids: Children are welcome in every suite, but no infants under 2, please. Anyone under 18 must be supervised by an adult at all times, especially near the water.
No visitors: Only registered guests may be on the property. Please don't have mail or packages sent here.
Cancellations & date changes: We follow our cancellation policy. Date changes need at least 14 days' notice before check-in.
Fire pit & firewood: Your suite has its own private fire pit. The fire pit is open year-round, 5–11 PM. Firewood is $9 a bundle (about a cubic foot) or 3 for $25. Message us and we'll bring it to you. You can pay through Houfy or in cash. Don't bring firewood from out of state, since that's illegal in NH. In winter, give us 24 hours' notice so we can shovel the pit out.
Parking: One spot per suite, marked with a small sign with your suite's name across the dirt road by the yellow shed. Please use only your own. Extra cars or trailers go in the overflow lot at Burns Lake Farm at the top of the hill, by the yellow house, about a 5-minute walk. There are two lots there. Please use the larger one, and don't block the dumpster or the garage. Let us know before you arrive.
Arriving after dark: Check-in is 3–9 PM. It's very dark here, so bring a flashlight or headlamp.
Smoking: No smoking or vaping indoors. You may smoke in the parking lot only. Please don't throw butts on the ground; put them in the trash.
Winter roads: We're on an unpaved road with a hill down to the property. It's plowed after every snowfall but always keeps a layer of packed snow. AWD/4WD is strongly recommended. FWD with good snow tires is usually fine. RWD isn't recommended. Sanding is $35 if you ask ahead, or $75 in an emergency. Tow trucks won't come down until the road is sanded. If you get stuck and we can't help, towing costs are the guest's responsibility.
What to bring: coffee/tea, ice, a flashlight, food and drinks. Summer: beach towels, bug spray, sunscreen, charcoal. Winter: traction cleats, an ice scraper, snowshoes or skis, and skates for the King Square rink in Whitefield.
