About this place

ROOM: * This is a private room suitable for a single traveller or a couple.

There is one queen size bed. In peak season the bathroom and separate toilet may be shared with other guests. (Doesn't happen often)

* No guest kitchen.

* It is a large bedroom with amazing views over the farm. There is plenty of space to sit and relax.

* The flue/chimney from our wood stove goes through the room so it is always nice and warm. (Note sometimes you may hear the sound of the fire through the chimney).

If you want an interesting room on a farm where quiet and privacy are valued, this could be the place. No other houses are visible from ours yet we are only 10mins from the town. We run an authentic NZ farmstay where you can get up close to all the animals.

WORRIED ABOUT YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT? For every booking made with us, $10 goes towards a native NZ tree that we plant here on the property for you, to help reestablish the area of forest that was destroyed by a cyclone in 2018. That tree will offset some of your carbon footprint created by travelling here.

LOCATION

The house sits on top of a ridge overlooking native bush and farmland with views of the Tasman Sea in the distance. The property is a 75 acre farm with sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and birds. You will need a car to make the most of our place.

We are only a 5min drive to the beach which is a beautifully wild place filled with amazing driftwood and pebbles - a great place for a bonfire.

IMPORTANT - WE ARE AN ECO-FRIENDLY HOME

** Our house is completely off-grid. All our power comes from a solar panel array. All our water is rainwater collected from the roof. Many of the features in the house are from building recyclers. If you need microwaves, hairdryers and A/C etc, sorry we are not the place for you.

GUEST ACCESS: Guests have access to their own private bedroom with sitting space and bathroom. There is also a separate guest lounge area. At peak tourist times you may have to share the bathroom, this is not common though.

You are free to wander the farm to see the animals.

For safety reasons the power shed is off limits to guests.

**The kitchen is not available to guests. There are some excellent restaurants in Hokitika.

We are happy to give you plenty of tips and advice about local attractions/history/places to eat and shop and tips on travel in NZ.

We are LGBTQ friendly!

ACTIVITIES: Hokitika is the perfect place to base yourself while exploring the West Coast. All the best attractions are only a short drive away. See our Guides for more activities.

There are many easy bush walks close to our house, the closest winds through an old goldmine site dating back to the 1800's.

Take a walk through Hokitika town and see some of the sights mentioned in the Booker Prize winning author, Eleanor Catton's book, The Luminaries.

You really need at least two days in Hokitika to see most of the attractions.

TRANSPORT: A car is a must to make the most of sightseeing.

There is a local taxi service.

We are 15mins from the airport.

The Tranz Alpine train comes into Greymouth Station 30 mins drive away.

The West Coast Cycle Trail is nearby.

Christchurch is 3 hours drive away over SH73 through Arthur's Pass.

As we are off-grid, we must be careful with our power. We do not have a microwave, air conditioning, dishwasher or electric blankets (we offer hotwater bottles in winter), but our house is very warm. Use of hairdryers is not permitted.

Much of our cooking is done on a woodstove in our kitchen. This also provides all the heating for the house. Water is collected from rainwater on the roof and totally safe to drink. In summer water is in short supply and we need to be careful with water use. We have cellphone coverage but it is not good.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE CANCELLATION POLICY. THE POLICY WILL APPLY TO ALL CANCELLATIONS INCLUDING COVID RELATED ISSUES.

**Make yourself at home - we look forward to meeting you!**

We offer a friendly and warm space that is quite different from a hotel experience. We want guests to feel comfortable and at home in the spaces we have set up. Our listings really appeal to folks who love character homes, enjoy art on the walls and vintage/retro furniture.

We have both traveled extensively.
We absolutely love living here in Hokitika. It has a wonderful community - we are a really eclectic bunch. The scenery is wild and stunning and the history is fascinating.
I'm busy running our farm as well as working. We look forward to meeting our guests and are always happy to help you plan activities here on the West Coast - rain or shine - it is a fantastic place to be.
