The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world, suited to both spin and fly-fishing. Large populations of muskie, catfish, black crappie, perch, bluegill, sunfish and bass provide anglers with plentiful catches. The small tributaries are stocked with brown and rainbow trout; a prime location for smallmouth and redeye bass. A number of local guides lead both spin and fly fishing trips.

In Whitetop, rent comfort-seat bicycles to take a leisurely ride almost all downhill along the relaxing, shaded Virginia Creeper Trail, an old railroad line converted into a trail popular with families and couples for biking, horseback rides and hiking that goes by breathtakingly gorgeous creeks. Visit Grayson Highlands State Park to see wild ponies & catch concerts like the annual Wayne Henderson Festival.
