The Fiesta of Five Flags organization was formed to celebrate the founding of Pensacola. In 1559, Spanish Conquistador, Don Tristan de Luna, established Pensacola as the first European settlement in the United States. Since that time five different flags have flown over the City: Spanish, French, British, Southern, and American.

The Festival of Five Flags, or Our Fiesta of Five Flags, sponsors events that celebrate Pensacola's founding and history as the first European settlement in the United States. As America’s Oldest Settlement, there is so much history to remember and celebrate.

The Fiesta organizations Mission and Vision Statements show their dedication to the diverse history and culture that makes Pensacola unique:

"Mission:

To celebrate our heritage, promote tourism and build pride in Pensacola through festive activities which enhance the quality of life in our community.

Vision:

To encourage and help perpetuate in the minds of people, near and far, Pensacola’s rich and diverse history and continually foster pride and spirit in our community."

This is not a new festival and there is historic footage from 1955 to compare with today's festivities available.

Fiesta of Five Flags (June 9-12, 1955)

This film starts with a shot of a souvenir program showing the name and dates of the event. There are shots of a crowd on a pier as a group of costumed men arrive on a sloop. Next are scenes of pageantry and more of an indoor pageant.
