Traffic conditions vary throughout the year and it is important to heed signage and directions from Caltrans and the CHP. In the winter you are required to carry chains at all times in your vehicle. This is not only a smart thing to do, but if you come across a chain check point and do not have chains with you CHP will not let you continue. This can greatly impact your travels and enjoyment of your time in the mountains.

We at Bear Haven Cabin use an app called CARR California Road Reports. This app shows you road closures and chain check points. It is great to have while you are traveling. We also use KBHR for information about weather and road conditions. Please follow all directions given by local authorities and do not try to outsmart them. They are there for your safety and you do not want to wind up like the folks in this news story.

Article and photos by Raymond Ray At 8:56 p.m. on Saturday evening, a 911 caller requested rescue assistance from San Bernardino County Fire. According to transcribed 911 call information, a total of 15 people including three children, were stranded on a dirt road approximately 14 miles west of Fawnskin n the Deep Creek Wilderness.
