Great sunsets. The dock on the left is now open (we moved that boat lift) if you want to tie your own boat to the empty dock - it is well padded and ready to host your boat. The water tramp is a highlight too. Both docks are yours to use.
The Rave brand 20 wide water tramp. Great for lounging and / or jumping on. The launcher off to the side is great for launching kids and yours to use. (This is only in the water between Memorial and Labor Day).
This pontoon is available for rent for an additional fee. It is NOT INCLUDED in the base rental fee.
Lake side fire pit..... the ducks in the background are our pet ducks. If you are a guest in 2020, they like to be near humans but will keep about 10 feet from you.
We have three fire pits total. One on the beach, a gas pit on the middle deck and a 3rd near the cabin.
Top deck has great views of the lake too.
The place is much larger than the picture would indicate. It is 1700 sq feet.
Panfish a plenty. Known for crappie, bass and some walleye, Cotton is a great ice fishing lake too.
Fire pit # 3 sits at the waters edge.
The Maui mat. Strong enough to hold a teenage kid and yours to use.
Rain day? Lots of games, and both TVs have Netflix.
One canoe, two kayaks, two stand up paddle boards (SUPs) available for your use. Not shown - paddle boat.
Tether ball and hammock ten feet from the top of deck.
Lots and lots of privacy! This is from the back door - there are no neighbors visible at all in any direction.
Detroit Mountain has the best downhill single track mountain bilking in the state.
No need to be a world class mountain biker to tackle these hills. They are big enough to be fun but not so big they are scary. All within about 7.5 miles.
Close to Curley's a great lakes area restaurant. 7.5 miles to the SE is Detroit Mountain and 10 miles South East is the City of Detroit Lakes.
The Hot Tub - awesome in the summer and more awesomer in the winter.
Winter wonderland
The snowmobile trails run adjacent to Cotton Lake for good winter fun.
We are 7.5 miles from Detroit Mountain ski resort. They offer full ski rental and tubing.
We are ten miles north of the City of Detroit Lakes. Here we are in front of the 2017 Ice Castle. There is always something going on in DL.
Tamarac is great for photographers, birders, hikers and hunters. #3, the Bog Boardwalk is an amazing hike.
Detroit Mountain, six miles away has great skiing, tubing and snowshoeing and fat bike rentals. Just show up, they have all the gear.
Five miles North are the groomed cross country trails of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge
Great ice fishing in the winter. Curley's Bar plows ice roads onto the ice to meet demand.
Good food at decent prices just 1.5 miles away by road.
A Minnesota Lake Favorite - Zorbaz features live music every Friday and Sat night. 11.3 miles away.
Another area favorite, Long Bridge is about 12 miles away and features a tropical feel and a bridge to jump off.... (see next picture).

About this place

Privacy. 320' of Shore Line. Detroit Lakes - Pontoon Available.

Our lake home has plenty of space to gather as a family and (maybe more importantly) enough space to get away from one another as well.

Two wood fire pits, a gas firepit, a hot tub, great fishing, plenty of board & yard games. It is well suited for your large family. Located 3:05 from Maple Grove and 1 hour from Fargo - it is a great getaway. Please see below for all the details. Cotton Lake is provides a rare combination of size (1800 acres is a big lake) and solitude. Even on the busiest of weekends, the lake is quiet compared to most large lakes. Unless you try really hard, you will not see the neighbors. This is a big differentiation vs most properties in the area. On most properties your neighbors will be close enough where you can hear their conversations and they can hear yours. At our place, we need to be respectful of the neighbors but you will not see them from the beach area at all. You can see the road from the West facing windows but that is it.

It is the epitome of an 'up north' cabin with soaring eagles and howling loons. I guarantee you will see plenty of both during your stay. If you are interested, pontoon boat rental is available as well for an extra charge from a 3rd party that will deliver the pontoon right to the lake.

We have a 22 foot pontoon. This is not included as part of the rates advertised above but is available with an extra rental agreement and for a fee. It is not too fancy but is clean and runs like a champ. For an extra $200 per day, it is a deal as the local marinas will charge much more.

Despite its solitude, the cabin offers all the creature comforts of a year round home including a dishwasher, WiFi with 50mps speed, two TVs and Air Conditioning.

If the weather tuns or you just want to run into town, the City of Detroit Lakes is 9 miles south. DL is a great touristy town with great little shops, boat and jet ski rentals and a population of about 8,800. Detroit Mountain, about 7 miles to the south, is a year round recreation center with downhill skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. Both bikes and skis are available for rent. DM has great XC skiing trails as well but if that is your thing, you may want to head to Maplelag which is 22 miles north.

Five miles west is a gun range if you want to shoot stuff. Five miles south you can tube the Ottertail River with an outfitter for $10 per person which is fun and is a great way to kill two hours on a sunny afternoon.

Cotton Lake has it's own restaurant, Curley's which has great food including steaks, prime rib, burgers with a pool table and juke box etc. Curley's is a ice fishing destination as they plow an ice road every year. Although you can walk directly from our place in to pop a hole in the ice, you may opt for a quick 1 mile drive to Curley's so you can drive your rig ( UTV, truck etc) directly onto the ice. You can take your snowmobile directly from our driveway to the lake. Minnesota DNR Snowmobile trails 272 and 275 both run across Cotton Lake. Park your sleds in our driveway and access hundreds of miles of trail, we take the run from Cotton Lake up to Elbow Lake a few times per winter.

The cabin has great views of the lake and of sunsets but that also means steps to the lake. Although there are 27 steps from the house to the beach, there is a private gravel road to the beach area as well should you prefer to drive up and down. We own this road and it a great way to get grandma and grandpa up and down (although our 92 year old grandpa can make the trip via stairs).

Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge flanks the North Side of Cotton Lake for those interested in birding, hiking or biking. TNWF, at 66 sq miles, features a learning center with regularly scheduled programs. If you are into horseback riding, take a peek at Timberline Horse Ranch about 6 miles away, for $45 Ann will take you on an hour long trail ride on one of her awesome horses.

The big grocery store is 10 miles away with a convenience store located two miles down the road.

In summary - there are plenty of things to do in the area should you be interested in something other than enjoying your very own beach :-) If you have any questions about our place or the area, please let me know and I will be glad to help. We use the place quite a bit in the summer time but are happy to rent M-F during the summer. During fall, winter and spring, we are happy to rent nearly anytime.

Three notes -

1) The second bathroom is a 3/4 bath (sink, tub and toilet - no shower).

2) We collect taxes as part of the fee - we remit taxes as part of the rental fee. Yes, we pay our taxes even though you don't see them broken out as a seperate line item.

3) We ask that you leave the place clean as possible. Of course we clean between guests but the laundry takes awhile so we need your help there.
