Driftwood and Sand Sculpture Competition, Hokitika Beach, New Zealand.
The 2020 Driftwood and Sand sculpture competition will begin in January in Hokitika. The event runs every year at this time. It has had to be moved further south along the beach this year, as the coastline has changed and there is now very little beach where the event usually is. Sculptures are now further south at Sunset Point, near the Tambo memorial shipwreck where there is a lot more sand and plenty of driftwood for artists to create their masterpieces. Every spring on the West Coast the spawning native trout rush from the ocean back into the West Coast river systems. They are met by throngs of people who stand ready to catch as many ‘shoals’ as possible over the two months of the whitebait season. You can walk along the river banks close to the ocean and discover for yourself what the whitebait means to the local residents. It’s a little like gold fever when the whitebait is "running".
