Located in the grove-lined streets of Ladd's Addition, this hypoallergenic flat, and the surrounding garden, is an oasis of calm at the center of the hippest area of the city.

The Shire is designed for exceptional comfort and a truly excellent night’s sleep. It’s also a great home office with blazing-fast internet and is well soundproofed.

Welcome to The Shire!

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate pets or service animals at The Shire. Your host has a medical exemption from hosting any service or emotional support animals.

We also have a no-perfume, cologne, or heavily scented products policy, as they pose a serious health risk to one of your hosts. We do supply luxurious, high-end unscented products available for our guests to use.

For the same reason, no unregistered visitors are allowed on the property unless your host approves an exception well in advance.

As these policies are out of medical necessity to protect your host's health, they are enforced with a zero-tolerance policy. If broken, your reservation will be cancelled, you will be asked to leave immediately, and you will not be offered a refund.

We do encourage follow-up questions before booking! If any of this is unclear, or if you have questions about specific products, please ask us! We understand that a hypoallergenic flat is unusual. Additionally, if you have any special needs you would like us to be aware of, please let us know those as well!

Now, to the good part!

This large double-lot property has a beautiful garden designed by a renowned horticulturist. Hummingbirds, butterflies, neighborhood cats, and rabbits may visit you in the garden! Sit out in the Shire’s garden and enjoy a gorgeous view of the city's public rose garden directly across the street. :)

The flat itself is a two-bedroom daylight basement apartment that is well insulated and soundproofed to stay cool in the summer and warm and cozy in the winter.

There are two good-sized bedrooms, each with generous closet space. Exceptional mattresses and luxury sheets in both bedrooms will help ensure an excellent night’s sleep. There are also top-of-the-line mini-splits in each bedroom for whisper-quiet AC or heat, to allow each bedroom to be set to its own personal temperature.

You will have private access to the flat at the rear of the property, and a well-kept back alley makes dropping off bags within a few feet of the door to your flat a breeze!

This is technically a single bathroom flat; however, the bathroom facilities are split into two completely separate rooms in European fashion. One room has a toilet and a vanity sink, while the other separate room has a large shower, a second vanity sink, and a makeup table.

The kitchen has a sink; dishwasher; refrigerator; microwave; large toaster-oven/air-fryer; Nespresso machine; electric kettle; French press; double hotplate; and high-speed blender. Please note that— though there is the high-end toaster oven/air fryer, induction hot plates, and an electric skillet for cooking—there is no traditional oven range in the flat. The kitchen table is counter height and seats two at a time.

We provide especially fast fiber-optic internet. Your dedicated wifi usually runs at around 600+Mbps, but there is also a Cat6A internet port available in the flat that I have clocked up to 800+Mbps for our more tech-intensive guests. Please note that— as tempting as it might be with Internet speeds this fast— crypto mining is not allowed. One of the bedrooms includes a standing/sitting desk as well as an ergonomic office chair; the other includes an accent chair with a laptop desk.

There is a sofa and a smart TV that you can use to log into your favorite streaming services. We also provide Hulu Premium streaming service gratis. If you’d prefer to work from the couch, you can connect your laptop to the TV either wirelessly through Chromecast or by connecting your cable to the HDMI port on the TV.

High chair and pack and play are available in the flat, but you will need to bring your own linens for the pack and play.

Level 2 car charging is available from 9 pm-9 am for an additional fee. Please message us in advance for details!

If you have fragrance sensitivities or animal allergies, The Shire is likely an excellent choice for you! We use unscented hypoallergenic cleaning products and laundry detergents. We even have automated humidity control and air filtration to prevent mold and mildew. Please feel free to reach out with specific questions or challenges that you face when you travel. We get it!

Guest access
Your exterior door at the back of our home is at the ground floor and opens directly into your private apartment. Once inside, there is a single staircase that descends directly into the flat (see photos).

There is a well-cared-for alley that runs behind our home, making it very easy to drop off bags just a few feet from your door. You are additionally welcome to enjoy the south garden during your stay (see pictures)! The garden is shared with your hosts. Garden quiet hours are 8 PM to 8 AM for the consideration of our wonderful neighbors. :)

Other things to note
The flat is very well soundproofed for your comfort and privacy.

We provide all of our guests with luxury hypoallergenic scent-free personal products, including shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, soap, etc. We additionally have an automated humidity control system to prevent molds, and we strive to maintain an exceptionally clean and scent-free environment for our guests who suffer from allergies, or who otherwise have a compromised immune system.

On that same note, please make sure to carefully read through the entire listing to fully understand the house rules and policies of the listing before booking, as these will be strictly enforced out of medical necessity.

Due to one of your hosts having a serious health condition, we have to have some specific rules/policies concerning no service animals or pets on the property, no strongly scented personal products (like perfumes and scented hairspray), no unapproved visitors on the property, and no smoking or vaping anywhere on the property.
