The Old School | Historic Westfjords Retreat - Þingeyri

The space
The restoration of Gamli skóli in an ongoing family project and was guided by a simple idea: to give this remarkable building a new life while preserving its history and character. Rather than replacing original features, great care was taken to restore and reuse materials wherever possible.

Every effort has been made to honour the building’s heritage while creating a comfortable and welcoming place to stay. The former dining hall has been carefully restored with a terrazzo floor inspired by the original, while the kitchen – once serving generations of students – has been thoughtfully modernised. Throughout the house, reclaimed windows, doors, furniture and period details have been incorporated, reflecting the craftsmanship and architectural style of the early 20th century.

The restoration of Gamli skóli is an ongoing project. The first phase has now been completed and is ready to welcome guests, while work continues on other parts of the building. No renovation work takes place during rent outs, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful and private experience throughout your visit.

Guest access
Guests enjoy exclusive access to a private wing of Gamli skóli with its own separate entrance. The entire guest wing, including six bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, living and dining areas, and three bathrooms, is reserved exclusively for your group. While the building has other areas, your accommodation is completely self-contained, ensuring privacy throughout your stay.
