PLEASE NOTE BEFORE BOOKING: The Upper Barn is reached by a winding spiral staircase inside our silo. It is not wheelchair accessible. Guests must be able to safely climb and descend the spiral stairs. Please consider the stairway when booking for anyone with limited mobility.

Welcome to the Upper Barn at Friedenswald

Slow down, settle in, and enjoy a peaceful Northwoods getaway just north of Merrill, Wisconsin. Our private, 1,500-square-foot Upper Barn combines rustic charm with comfortable places to gather, relax, and make memories.

Your stay begins with a one-of-a-kind entrance: a spiral staircase inside a reclaimed silo, built using trees harvested from our 4.5-acre property. Bob’s creativity is part of the welcome!

Sleeping Arrangements — Sleeps Up to 7

The barn has an open layout rather than separate enclosed bedrooms. You’ll find:

One king-size bed with a privacy wall.

One queen-size Murphy bed

One full-size Murphy bed

One twin-size Murphy bed

Murphy beds fold down from the wall when needed. A folding wall surrounds the king bed for visual privacy, but it does not reach the ceiling or create a separate bedroom.

Fresh bedding is provided.

The Upper Barn has its own private full bathroom with a tub and a shower. An additional shared bathroom is downstairs in the lower barn.

Kitchenette & Dining

The kitchenette includes:

Microwave

Two-burner hot plate

Toaster and toaster oven

Coffee maker and hot water kettle

Cooking utensils, dinnerware, and silverware

Coffee, tea, sugar, salt, oil, and a few spices

A Nesco roaster or slow cooker is available by request. Bring your favorite ingredients and enjoy a meal together at the dining table.

Room to Relax

Make yourself comfortable on the couch, loveseat, or rocking chair. Extra chairs are available in the closet.

The TV lets you sign in to your own streaming accounts. Please remember to sign out before heading home!

Shared Spaces to Enjoy

Your Upper Barn space is private. The lower barn entryway, downstairs bathroom, laundry room, Silo Library, and outdoor areas are shared with other guests.

Outside, you can:

Gather under the pavilion and cook on the gas grill

Enjoy an evening around a fire pit

Explore wooded paths through the property

Relax beside the ponds and waterfall

Sit on the floating dock or beneath the covered bridge

Let the kids enjoy the playground and whimsical playhouse

Book lovers can settle into the Silo Library or borrow a book to enjoy during their stay.

We invite you to make yourself at home in these shared spaces, leave room for others to enjoy, and perhaps meet a new friend along the way!

Our Neighborhood & Your Hosts

Friedenswald is in a quiet country neighborhood with more than four miles of neighborhood roads, including paved stretches for walking and bike riding. There’s plenty of parking on-site.

We live on the property and are usually nearby. You’ll have our cell phone numbers if you need anything, and you’re welcome to ring our doorbell, too.

Our hope is that you’ll feel at home, enjoy time with your people, and leave a little more rested than when you arrived.

One last reminder: Access to the Upper Barn requires climbing and descending the silo’s spiral staircase. Please make sure this entrance works for everyone in your group before booking.
