The Staten Island Ferry is Free and runs 24/7, all year round. The ferry is 25 min ride to Lower East Manhattan, from here you can take local or express trains, 4, 5, 6, 1, R trains to Central Manhattan (Times Square, Central Park etc...), or to Queens or Brooklyn.
Lots of Bus stops are only 1 min walk distance from the apartment, which it takes around couple minutes to the ferry terminal. The Buses cost $2.75 per person and runs 24/7.
