Every winter, thousands of northerners trade shoveling snow for palm trees — and most of them head straight to South Florida, where they pay peak prices to sit in traffic. There's a better option: St. Augustine Beach. Milder crowds, a walkable historic downtown 15 minutes away, and winter weather that's made for exploring instead of hiding from the heat.

If you're thinking about a month-long winter escape, here's everything worth knowing.

What winter actually feels like here

Let's be honest: December through February isn't swim season. But it's the driest, clearest stretch of the year — crisp blue-sky days made for walking, not sweating. Here's the month-by-month picture:

  • December: Highs around 69°F, lows near 51°F. Holiday sweater weather, usually sunny.

  • January: Highs around 67°F, lows near 48°F. The coolest month — pack layers.

  • February: Highs around 70°F, lows near 50°F. Slightly milder, still crisp.

  • March: Highs around 74°F, lows near 55°F. It starts warming up — some days feel like early summer.

  • April: Highs near 80°F, lows around 60°F. Genuinely warm, and the crowds haven't arrived yet.

A sunny 68° afternoon can turn breezy once the sun drops, so layers are the move all season. But for many snowbirds, this is the best weather of the year — empty beaches, no humidity, and you can explore the entire historic district on foot.

December: Nights of Lights season

If you can swing December, do it. St. Augustine's world-famous Nights of Lights — over three million white lights across 20 blocks of the historic district, named one of the world's top holiday displays by National Geographic — runs November 21, 2026 through January 18, 2027. All of December glows.

The smart play: stay at the beach, skip the downtown parking chaos entirely, and head in on a weeknight when the crowds are a fraction of weekend size. See our Insider's Guide to Nights of Lights for parking and viewing tips.

March and April: the warming-up window

March is when St. Augustine starts showing off — highs in the mid-70s, warm enough for the beach on good days, and still ahead of the spring-break rush. April pushes near 80°F with low humidity. If you want Florida warmth without Florida crowds (or South Florida prices), March and April are the sweet spot.

What to look for in a monthly rental

A month is very different from a weekend. Before you book, make sure your rental has:

  • A full kitchen. You'll cook most meals over a month — eating out every night gets old and expensive.

  • Washer and dryer in the unit. Non-negotiable for a long stay.

  • Fast, reliable Wi-Fi. Even if you're retired, you'll stream, video-call the grandkids, and look things up.

  • Dedicated parking. You'll have a car, and you don't want to hunt for street parking daily.

  • Beach access you can walk to. The whole point is the ocean — make sure it's steps away, not a drive away.

That's exactly how Coastal Dreams is set up: a 2-bedroom, 2-bath ocean-view condo with a full kitchen, in-unit washer/dryer, fast Wi-Fi, and private beach access — 15 minutes from historic downtown.

Things to do all winter long

Explore the historic district crowd-free. The Castillo, St. George Street, the Lightner Museum — the summer crowds are long gone. Winter is when locals actually go downtown.

Walk the beach. Winter beaches here are peaceful, wide, and beautiful. Mornings are the best.

Take day trips. You're centrally located for some of Florida's best day trips — check our day trip guide for ideas.

Eat well without overspending. Our local restaurant guide covers the spots near the condo, and many of the best free things in town cost nothing at all.

Have a rainy-day backup. Winter is dry, but not perfect — keep our rainy-day guide handy. For the full seasonal picture, see our fall and winter guide.

Tips for booking a monthly stay

  • Book direct and ask about monthly rates. Monthly pricing is typically discounted well below the nightly rate — but you have to ask.

  • Confirm what's included. Utilities, linens, starter supplies, mid-stay cleaning — get it in writing before you arrive.

  • Book early. The best winter rentals go first, especially December.
