Twin Shores Carova private pool, hot tub, dogs ok
We were searching for a bit of an adventure and better weather for spring break. We've never been to the Outer Banks before and wanted to take the dog with us, see some wild horses, and traverse the 4x4 beach. Twin Shores met our expectations. We saw the horses every day. We had two days of cooler weather and rain but that was okay because the awesome hot tub is in a screened covered porch on the upper level. You could hear the birds singing and waves crashing on the beach. The fighter jets were doing some formations and practice (really cool). This side of the beach is not busy at all. People driving on the beach are courteous and wave at you when they go by. Don't forget the great tips you'll get at this property. Air down your tires on the beach and 4x4 is a must. I saw 3 Jeeps stuck in the sand :) We took the F150 and tied the beach umbrella to the tailgate, pulled out the cooler, set out the kite to soar, and played ball with the dog on the beach. The sand is so soft. Ready to explore we went into Corolla and climbed the lighthouse, visited the nature center, hiked the Audubon trail to the marsh (no birds yet), did some shopping, and ate some local seafood and barbeque. Twin Shores is a well kept house. I don't have anything to compare to in the Outer Banks but this house was clean and in great condition. I was amazed at how well the wifi worked (way out there). It seems like the owner is constantly making upgrades for the comfort of the guests and clearly takes pride in making this spot a great vacation stop. I also liked that the owner was accommodating with our travel dates. I know the island can get crazy during certain times but we missed all the crazy traffic. I'll keep this on my list of places to go for sure.
Meant To Be
We had the opportunity to stay at Meant To Be in Sept 2010. I can't say enough what a wonderful stay we had. The house is exactly as described. The kitchen was well stocked with cookware and utensils and everything was clean and well-maintained. The owners were very responsive to any questions or problems that arose and Melissa even greeted us with a welcome call our first night. There were 4 adults and 5 children in our party and the house was plenty big enough to still have quiet time with wine and a book without being disturbed-the first level made a great "kid zone". The porches and captain's watch were great for viewing the ocean but the sunsets off the screened-in porch were spectacular! Being Sept, we were able to turn off the A/C and enjoy the sounds of the ocean and wildlife during the nights and mornings. In fact, we were awakened frequently by the horses in the backyard-quite a shock at 6AM! We did do some exploring in the nearby towns and dined out a couple of times, the drive gets easier every time, though driving the beach at night was quite an adventure-we even had to stop a few times to do some shelling by headlights! We saw lots of wildlife besides the horses-deer, dolphins, horseshoe crabs, a fox, a snake and even a sea turtle. There is really too much to talk about and we can't thank you enough for opening your home to us. Our time spent here was unforgettable.
Carova Beach House
We really enjoyed our stay at this property. It was exactly what we wanted - a beautiful house away from the main tourist area. Beware your GPS. For some reason, maps took us to a community a couple miles south. We had a small hiccup checking in, but the owners graciously made up for it. The rest of the vacation was complete bliss. We’d drive out onto the beach at mile marker 23.5 everyday and have fun. I made a few trips to town to the seafood and farmers market and cooked in the beautiful kitchen with very nice appliances and a gas range. As a professional chef, I was ecstatic when I saw the kitchen, since we like to do the majority of our own cooking during ocean vacations. We had a ton of fun, and lazy time, on the wrap around deck. All in all we would 100% go back again.
Splash of Lime - Carova
We really enjoyed our stay at A Splash of Lime. The house is lovely – clean and comfortable with lots of room to spread out – the kitchen is fully stocked with cookware and there are tvs in most - or maybe even every - bedroom. Every morning we had our coffee outside on either the front or back deck. There is a heated pool (necessary if you go off-season in April like we did) and a private hot tub where our family spent a lot of time. At one point the pool heater had an error message, and Marty was extremely responsive and had his maintenance person come to the house and address it asap. Speaking of the host, Marty was very informative and responsive, and he answered text messages right away. I had read that in other people’s reviews and they were spot on. So what else can I say about the ‘experience’ of staying here? Where else do you air down your tires and drive 9 miles on the beach to get to your destination, see wild horses roaming on the beach and around the property where you are staying? My kids will always remember this vacation, it was such a unique experience to stay in this part of the Outer Banks. It requires some pre-planning because if you forget something it’s a drive to get back to the grocery/liquor store/pharmacy, etc. But it’s totally worth it. If I had to do it all over I would stay here again.
Pelican Pad
This house was absolutely perfect!!!!! As soon as my kids walked in, they said they wanted to live there forever. The home was spacious, clean, and had gorgeous decor. The house also provided perfect instructions for us to be able to understand the rules of the 4x4, and what to expect. Ensuring that we not only enjoyed ourselves, but that we felt welcome and a part of what makes the OBX beautiful. The kitchen was fully stocked, and each bedroom basically had its own bathroom. The house came with plenty of beach chairs and boogie boards so we could spend hours at the beach/ocean. After spending hours at the beach, coming home to the house with a pool and hot tub was a HUGE part of why this trip was so successful! The kids loved being able to cool off in the pool, and the adults could dip right into the hot tub. This week was unforgettable, and we cannot wait to return. This beautiful house is truly a gem, with its spacious rooms, comfortable furnishings, and stunning ocean views. But what really sets this house apart is its incredible location. The wild horses of the Outer Banks roam freely nearby, and we were treated to daily visits from the horses. Watching them run, play, and graze on the beach was a truly magical experience. The house itself is perfect for large families or groups of 12 and under, with plenty of space to spread out and relax. *Cons:* None (unless you're not a fan of sand in your shoes)
Horse Haven Carova
Our stay at Horse Haven was once again absolutely spectacular. The house and its location could not be better. We love the seclusion of it, yet it is so close to the beach. Furthermore, waking up and being able to see the sound side and the boats going up and down it is so much fun. It definitely beckoned me to get into the kayak and go exploring, which we did. Even on days when you felt like you really didn’t want to go anywhere, you could just relax and lounge by the pool or sit on the deck and watch the boats go by. I was also very thankful that the deck had gates with latches on them so that my dog could sit out there and enjoy the serenity and beauty of nature with me without having to worry about him getting off the deck. This is a very big plus in my book. He also enjoyed his strolls down to the park area each evening to watch the sunset over the water. As for the house, it was very well stocked with everything we needed to enjoy our stay there. The only thing we had to supply was food. Upon arrival I had forgotten to bring our linens and the worst part was that we had arrived around 1:30 in the morning. I reached out to Dale, thinking that he would probably not see my text until morning. I was pleasantly surprised that he responded almost immediately and helped me to remedy the problem at hand. I have never received such prompt and helpful service from anyone else that I have stayed with in my many years of vacationing. I would have to say that he would rival Google in helping to answer a question that I had with such proficiency. My only complaint would be that I should have booked a longer stay. This is definitely on my agenda for next time.
