The swimming pigs are one of he most sought after excursions in the world right now. They are such a unique attraction, that tourists are putting Exuma on the top of their bucket list, and putting the experience of swimming with them as their number one priority upon arrival on the island. Locals and tourists alike have converged on Exuma just to have a swim with, and even feed the captivating pigs.

The Exuma Cays are a collection of 360, mostly uninhabited tropical islands surrounded by the most beautiful tourquoise waters you will ever see! Accounts of how these pigs originally arrived on the island vary. Many say the pigs had been released on Big Major Cay by a group of sailors who wanted to come back and cook them. The theory was that if they propagate, there will always be food; although, the sailors never returned. Another legend is that the pigs were shipwrecked there, and they miraculously made their way to the shore; in both instances surviving on food from released from passing ships. The pigs are now fed by locals and tourists, and the island is unofficially known as Pig Beach.

These adorable, amazing pigs can now also be seen a short distance away from the main island; just off the tip of Great Exuma. So, if you are staying at Turtle View, you can do the all day excursion to Big Major Cay along with several other wonderful stops along the way, go on a short boat excursion from Georgetown to see them, or drive to the northern tip of the island at Barraterre, and take a 10 minute boat ride from there to see them swim every day in the crystal clear waters of Exuma, where they are lucky enough to live on their own beautiful private island. They paddle over to visitors who come by boat to their island to see this astonishing site of swimming pigs frolicking around in the alluring azure waters.

These pigs are surprisingly strong swimmers. Even the young piglets are at home in the water. They are really resourceful, as they swim out to a boat for a free meal. They are truly living the dream...raising their family on a tropical island with nothing to do but eat, sleep, and swim!
