Best Things to Do Near Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg & Wears Valley
One of the best things about visiting the Smoky Mountains is the variety. You can ride roller coasters at Dollywood, explore downtown Gatlinburg, enjoy a scenic drive through Wears Valley, or spend an afternoon watching wildlife in Cades Cove.
And where you stay can make all the difference.
At Stay Wild Cabin, we enjoy a private mountain setting on approximately 2.5 wooded acres while remaining conveniently positioned for exploring Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Wears Valley, Townsend, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Here are some of our favorite ways to experience the area.
1. Outdoor Adventures Right Around Stay Wild
Before heading to the area's biggest attractions, consider the outdoor adventures practically around the corner.

2. Pigeon Forge: Dollywood, The Island and Family Attractions
Pigeon Forge is packed with activities for families, couples and groups.
Dollywood combines roller coasters, live entertainment, crafts, Southern food and seasonal festivals. It's worth setting aside a full day to explore.
The Island in Pigeon Forge features restaurants, shopping, entertainment, the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel and its popular fountain shows.
Titanic Museum Attraction offers an interactive experience exploring the history of the famous ocean liner.
You'll also find dinner shows, mountain coasters, mini golf, go-karts and plenty of family entertainment throughout town.
From Stay Wild, Dollywood is approximately 6.8 miles away, while The Island is approximately 5.6 miles away.
3. Gatlinburg: Mountain Views and Downtown Fun
Gatlinburg offers a different atmosphere, with a walkable downtown surrounded by the mountains.
Anakeesta provides mountaintop views, gardens, elevated walkways and adventure activities.
Gatlinburg SkyPark is known for its scenic chairlift and SkyBridge.
Downtown Gatlinburg also offers shops, restaurants and family attractions.
It's an excellent destination for spending several hours exploring on foot.
Stay Wild is approximately nine miles from the Gatlinburg area, depending on your destination.
4. Wears Valley: Scenic Drives and Peaceful Mountain Countryside
Wears Valley is one of the best places to enjoy a slower pace in the Smokies.
Instead of busy attractions, you'll find open mountain scenery, country roads, small local businesses and beautiful views.
Consider driving through the valley, stopping for a meal at a local restaurant or browsing a few shops.
Wears Valley also offers an alternative way into Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The route through Line Springs Road and Wears Cove Gap Road connects to the Metcalf Bottoms area, known for its riverside scenery, picnic areas and nearby historic sites.
It's a wonderful choice for travelers who appreciate the natural beauty of the mountains.

5. Townsend: Explore the Peaceful Side of the Smokies
Townsend is often called the peaceful side of the Smokies.
This quieter mountain community provides access to beautiful scenery, outdoor recreation and the western side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Explore the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, take a scenic drive along the Little River or enjoy the mountain views along the Foothills Parkway.
Townsend is also a convenient gateway for visitors planning a trip to Cades Cove.
6. Cades Cove: Wildlife, History and Mountain Scenery
Cades Cove is one of the most memorable places to explore in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The 11-mile, one-way scenic loop winds through a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains.
Along the way, visitors can see historic cabins, churches, open fields and wildlife.
Deer, wild turkeys and black bears may be spotted, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Allow at least two to four hours for the loop, potentially longer if you plan to stop for photographs or explore historic sites.
Always observe wildlife from a safe distance and check current road schedules and conditions before visiting.
Cades Cove makes an excellent longer outing when combined with a stop in Townsend.

7. Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Different Ways to Explore
One of the things visitors sometimes overlook is that Great Smoky Mountains National Park has multiple access points.
From Gatlinburg: Explore the Sugarlands area, Newfound Gap Road and popular hiking destinations.
From Wears Valley: Visit the Metcalf Bottoms and Little River areas.
From Townsend: Explore the western side of the park, including routes toward Cades Cove.
Each offers a different way to experience the Smokies.
Choose your route based on your interests, seasonal conditions and how much time you have available.
