The wonderful Christmas lights in the Borne, Palma de Mallorca

Christmas in Mallorca: A Festive Stay at Finca La Lavanda

Christmas in Mallorca is rather different from Christmas in northern Europe. There are twinkling lights, Christmas markets, beautifully decorated streets and all the familiar festive traditions — but there is also the possibility

At Finca La Lavanda, near Alaró, we love this combination of a traditional Christmas atmosphere with the Mediterranean outdoors. The finca is decorated for Christmas, the wood-burning fireplace creates a cosy gathering place in the evenings, and there is also an outdoor fire pit for enjoying the gardens and mountain views.

And with central heating throughout the house, you can be warm and comfortable whatever the weather.

Christmas lights and markets in Palma

A visit to Palma is a wonderful part of a Christmas stay in Mallorca.

As evening falls, the historic centre comes alive with Christmas lights, particularly around the old town, Passeig del Born and the streets around the cathedral. Palma's Christmas programme traditionally includes markets around Plaça Major, La Rambla, Via Roma, Plaça d'Espanya and Porta Pintada, as well as its much-loved nativity scenes.

For Christmas 2026, Palma's Christmas celebrations are also expanding around Parc de la Mar, beside the cathedral and the sea, with a Christmas market planned alongside the city's festive lighting.

A lovely way to spend an afternoon is to explore the old town, stop for lunch or tapas, do some Christmas shopping and then stay until dusk to see the lights come on.

Don't miss the traditional nativity scenes (belenes) either. Palma has a long-standing tradition of elaborate nativity displays in churches, convents, cultural centres and other historic buildings around the city.

The Christmas Market at Puerto Portals

For a more glamorous seaside Christmas experience, head to Puerto Portals.

The Puerto Portals Christmas Market runs from 11 December 2026 until 6 January 2027, with more than 60 wooden stalls decorated with Christmas lights and fir trees. There are gifts, decorations, food and drinks, family activities and a skating rink.

It is particularly enjoyable towards the end of the afternoon when the lights come on and the marina takes on a festive atmosphere.

For us, this is one of the nicest things about Christmas in Mallorca — you can combine a Christmas market with a walk beside the sea and perhaps sit outside for a drink afterwards.

Discover Mallorca's smaller Christmas markets

One of the pleasures of being based near Alaró is being able to explore some of Mallorca's smaller towns and villages rather than spending the whole holiday in the main resorts.

Alaró itself traditionally holds a Christmas market in December, making it an especially lovely time to visit the village just a few minutes from Finca La Lavanda.

You can also explore local markets in villages such as Santa Maria del Camí. Its traditional Sunday market is open throughout the year and is a great place to discover local produce, artisan goods and the character of one of Mallorca's inland villages.

The smaller village markets are a lovely complement to the larger Christmas markets in Palma and Puerto Portals — and they give you the opportunity to experience a more local side of Mallorca.

Christmas at Finca La Lavanda

After a day exploring the island, it is wonderful to come back to somewhere that feels like your own Christmas home.

We decorate Finca La Lavanda for Christmas, adding a little festive magic while keeping the character of the traditional Mallorcan finca.

Inside, the wood-burning fireplace makes the sitting room particularly cosy in the evenings. There is also central heating throughout the house, so the finca remains comfortable on cooler winter nights.

Outside, the fire pit is perfect for gathering together under the stars.

And then there is one of the great surprises of a Mallorca Christmas...

You may be able to have your Christmas drinks outside.

December in Mallorca is generally mild, and the island averages around 15°C daytime maximum temperatures in December, with plenty of sunshine. Of course, weather can vary and there are cooler or wetter days, but sunny winter days are common enough that outdoor lunches, coffee and Christmas drinks are very much part of the Mallorca experience.

Imagine sitting outside with a glass of cava, looking across the countryside towards the Tramuntana mountains, while the Christmas lights come on around the finca.

That is Christmas in Mallorca.

Christmas without the crowds

Another reason we love December here is that Mallorca feels completely different from the busy summer season.

The beaches are quiet, the mountain villages are peaceful and there is time to enjoy Palma's historic streets, local restaurants, markets and countryside without the summer crowds.

You can spend one day Christmas shopping in Palma, another exploring the Tramuntana, visit a local market in the morning and be back at the finca for lunch in the sunshine.

Or simply stay home, light the fire and enjoy the peace and space of the finca.

A different kind of Christmas

If you're looking for a Christmas break that combines traditional festive atmosphere, beautiful countryside, good food, Christmas markets and the possibility of winter sunshine, Mallorca makes a wonderful alternative to a traditional cold-weather Christmas.

And at Finca La Lavanda, you get the best of both worlds — a cosy Christmas finca with a fireplace and fire pit, together with the freedom to enjoy Mallorca's outdoors in December.

We'd love to welcome you.
