About this place
hillbilly hip TN farmhouse
Warm days, cozy nights on the Little Pigeon River—this 200-year-old Farm House (IG @thehillbillyhouse) is close to everything yet feels worlds away. Centrally located on 3+ acres of rolling open land & old growth trees. This was my dad’s oasis-part sailor, part mountain man-it has creaky floors, antique furniture, artwork, books and stories in every corner. Seclusion with easy accessibility-no treacherous mountain roads! Historic with all the modern upgrades. Eclectic style. Down to earth vibe.
The space
The Farmhouse is located in the historic community of Pittman Center—15 minutes from downtown Gatlinburg, 20 minutes from Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, and only 10 minutes from the Greenbrier entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You’ll be right across the road from your own private swimming and fishing spot (we own that piece of the river) on the beautiful Little Pigeon River, with a river rock beach, deep swimming hole, and clear, fish-filled water.
While the farmhouse maintains its original authentic Appalachian architecture, we do have all the modern conveniences, including Wi-Fi, brand new central HEATING/AIR, upgraded hot water heater, recent insulation additions, -everything to make this cabin not only the most authentic in the Smoky’s but the coziest as well!
Once you’re here, you might not feel the need to go anywhere. It’s the kind of spot where time slows down, and doing nothing starts to feel like doing something. However, you’re just a short drive from places like Anakeesta, Dollywood, downtown Gatlinburg, the Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts community, the Smoky Mountain National Park and so much more, but if you choose to stay put, you’ve chosen the right place.
This historic farmhouse sits quietly on nearly 4 acres between the river out front and wide open fields and old growth forests behind. The house is peaceful, lived-in, and still used by family from time to time—so it feels more like a real home than a typical rental.
Inside, you’ll find tons of books, art, original historic details, and all the quirks that come with an old structure: creaky floors, no true angles, and plenty of charm. It’s clean and comfortable, and while there are modern conveniences, we’ve kept much of the original spirit intact. The river rock and mud (only) double sided fireplace is the heart of the cabin. It’s really something to see, a true piece of history.
Out back, you’ll find a vintage 1958 Cameo pickup parked under the carport, a rolling field leading to a forest walking path, and lots of space to explore or just relax. This place is naturally a photography lover’s dream! The place shifts with the seasons—spring brings fresh green and blooming mimosa trees. Summer’s for porch sitting and river swims. Fall lights up the hills in color. Winter’s quiet, good for slowing down and watching the fog roll through the holler. It’s a different kind of beautiful year-round, and the land wears each season in its own unique way.
I reside in a tiny house on the property in case anything comes up—but you’ll have full privacy and the place to yourself.
Guest access
Guests have full access to the farmhouse and surrounding land, including the private river access across the street, the pasture area out back, the forest walking path, and all indoor and outdoor spaces shown in the photos. Note: There is a full bathroom inside the farmhouse with a clawfoot tub, toilet and sink. The main shower is outdoors (just outside the bedroom door on the back deck) and people love it almost year round (dad was hard-core and would step over 2 feet of snow into a steaming hot winter shower!) under the stars or in the sunshine! Also, for the adventurous there is the outhouse! Always good in case of emergencies or fun photo ops! Plenty of private outdoors for you and your animal to run and play!
Other things to note
Perfect for couples or friends traveling together, but can accommodate additional guests as there is a queen size air mattress available for the living room and the couch can accommodate one additional person, please inquire for details.
There is plenty of parking, a paved driveway and no treacherous mountain roads to navigate. Very easy to access and close to locals eats/grocery stores as well as the Greenbrier entrance to the Great Smoky National Park.
You’ll have the farmhouse all to yourself, but I live nearby in a tiny house just up the hill — about 75 feet above, tucked into the woods.
It’s close enough that I’m available if you need anything — fresh towels, local tips, help with the gas stove. I have fishing poles and tackle box, tubes for floating and picnic blankets. The kitchen is fully stocked. It’s a work horse kitchen with lots of cast-iron and plenty of the essentials. If you have any questions or concerns before booking please just reach out. This is a unique place and if you’re looking for your average cabin stay in the Smokies this probably isn’t it. But if you enjoy character, history and privacy and a lot of land to wander than you’ve found the right place.😊
