About this place
Spacious rural studio, fabulous views, treehouse balcony, spiral staircase, electric (ever-ready) hot tub and you can even get a massage onsite:)
You’ll love my place because of the wonderful views across open countryside, the hot tub, the spiral staircase and the tree growing through the balcony. It's as close as you can get to a treehouse with all the comforts of home. You can even book a massage onsite :) My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travelers.
Gorgeously romantic detached annex with stunning views across the High Weald area of outstanding natural beauty. Generously proportioned studio room with French doors to large private balcony with large tree growing through it. Spiral staircase to downstairs kitchenette and shower room. Private electric hot tub at the bottom of the tree. Access to beautiful shared garden with BBQs and firepit which backs onto open fields. Sleeps 2 very comfortably. Adults only. Self catering. Great Wifi, Smart TV.
Treetops is part of Oaklea Retreat in Herstmonceux, near Eastbourne (the sunniest place in England). It's an idyllic place for couples to come and chill and relax, with lots of lovely walks and nice pubs and restaurants locally. Set in the heart of 1066 country in the South Downs National Park Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it's also a great base for visiting Battle, Hastings, Rye, Bexhill, Alfriston, Cuckmere, Lewes, Brighton, Ashdown Forest and Tunbridge Wells. There's a wealth of local attractions, beaches, castles, places of historical interest, theatres, golf courses, stables, vineyards, sports such as horse riding, paddle boarding, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing, several escape rooms and you can even see live opera at Glynde.
It's on a tiny little lane with trees meeting over the road in places. There are lots of public footpaths including one that goes through next door's land and down through fields to the woods. Sometimes we have sheep in the field behind - at the moment we have cows with calves in the field beyond that.
Treetops is an ideal retreat or lovenest - it's wonderful space for getting away from it all and right into the countryside; to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature; to heal, write, create music or art or to study. It’s the perfect place to wind down and de-stress. It's very much a cosy country property rather than a stylish hotel setting but it's nicely and very comfortably furnished in rustic style. Horses clop along the lane outside and birdsong fills the air. At night you'll hear owls. There is a farmer along the lane who has equipment in use and large vehicles during the week sometimes so it's more reliably peaceful at weekends and cheaper during the week. The owner is an artist, music teacher and Reiki practitioner who lives in the main house with one child, two lovely dogs and two cats.
Treetops has a stable door with a Green Man knocker to the kitchen, which has a glass hob and electric fan oven, a larder fridge with a freezer compartment, a washing machine, a dishwasher and a microwave. It's is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and basics such as cooking oil, tea and proper coffee. There's a spiral staircase lit with fairy lights to the studio above and a door to the shower room, which has a very large shower enclosure and a powerful shower.
Upstairs there's a very comfortable seating area with two leather sofas, a 32" Smart TV and a little table and chairs ideal for eating at. Looking out of the huge velux windows through the arms of the tree you can see for miles across the countryside. It really is a wonderful view whatever the weather. There's a good selection of board games for rainy days and the wifi is fibre-optic and reliable. There's a desk under the window so you can work if you need to and watch the birds. Treetops has its own oil boiler so it's always warm and cosy.
The sleeping area has a deliciously comfortable king-sized bed, lit with fairy lights, of course :) The sheets are a cotton-lyocell blend on the bottom (cooling sateen) and high thread count 100% cotton on the sumptuous goose-feather duvet.
At the other end of the room there's a little dressing table with a mirror and a hairdryer and a wardrobe/hanging area and the French doors to the balcony.
The balcony is made of local Sussex oak by local craftsmen in the traditional Sussex style and it has a magnificent Beech tree growing through it. It's very private and very sunny and the views across the Weald are fabulous. There's a little arbour and a bistro set and two sun loungers that recline should you wish to soak up the sunshine. At night there's a light that lights the tree up beautifully - however if it's a clear night you might want it off because we have no street lighting so we get wonderful stars - Patrick Moore used to visit the weather station in the village because of the dark skies. You'll hear owls at night and all sorts of birdsong during the day.
Outside Treetops there's a large, shared area of garden which backs onto the fields. During the latest lockdown we extended the guest patio area to make social distancing easier. It has 2 charcoal BBQs (please bring charcoal) and a firepit which you can also cook on and pots of fresh herbs which you are welcome to use. Firewood is £5 a heaped bucket (cost price) which is enough for a couple of hours. There's also a giant chess set for guests to use. Next to the big patio is the Therapy Room where guests are able to book treatments such as Aromatherapy massage, Reflexology and Reiki. Beyond the patio is laid to turf, and at the very bottom of the garden, two Shepherd Huts (Meadowsweet and Heartsease) have been built for couples.
At the bottom of the tree, next to Treetops' front door, is the hot tub, exclusively for the use of Treetops' visitors. It really is bliss! It's got really strong massage jets, LED lights and a waterfall. It's utterly, deliciously, fabulously divine. Because it's electric it's always ready to use whenever you feel like it. Please be aware before you book there are some reasons you can't go in - if there're high winds or a thunderstorm, if you've got heart problems or are pregnant - or if you're wearing fake tan as the tan comes off the person and won't come off the tub!
Behind Treetops is the main house and owner's lawn and veg plot which is not fenced off for aesthetic reasons but guests are asked not to go beyond the big guest patio. We encourage guests to feel welcome in the shared spaces and avoid going very near each others' front doors, none of which overlook each other. There are a maximum of six adult guests onsite at any one time, which ensures the facilities are never too busy. You can choose to interact if you want to but it's a really big garden so if you'd rather keep yourselves to yourselves it's very easy to do so.
Check in is from 5pm and check out by 11am because of the time it takes to clean and change hot tub water. If you want to come earlier and explore the area there are loads of things to do in our Guidebook for Herstmonceux which has lots of information about the local area, places to eat, walk and visit and activities available nearby. You can find it by clicking on my profile picture. If I'm ready early I'll let you know ASAP. Likewise, if I'm able to offer a slightly later checkout I'll let you know :)
We have two dogs and a cat who are very friendly but not allowed in Heartsease because of people with allergies. Because we have our own pets we can't have anyone else's here and it wouldn't be fair to people with allergies so please don't book and then ask if you can bring your pet, no matter how well-behaved. Also if one of your party is afraid of animals please don't book as it's not practical to keep the dogs in all day. They love a game of ball and are very affectionate.
If you'd like Reiki it's £37 for a 45 minute session of full body and mind relaxation and restoration or £49 for an hour and quarter, which is a double dose and more suitable if you have more significant physical/emotional challenges to face. I have a colleague who can sometimes visit and who offers Aromatherapy massage and Reflexology. It's £30 for a 30 minute neck, back and shoulder massage and £35 for a 40 minute Reflexology foot massage. Treatments need to be pre-booked so they can be fitted in around existing work commitments.
If you’re interested in booking more than one of our places at the same time please click on my profile to see my other listings and check availability. The location is ideal for enjoying the great outdoors together while having your own separate accommodation. It's also a great venue for face-to-face team meetings/corporate treats because the wifi is great in all the accommodation and there's even a wifi router on the big guest patio.
The minimum stay is 2 nights because of the cleaning, laundry and hot tub water changes. This means you always get a sparkling clean tub and no extra hot tub fee. You can come for one night but you have to book two and this means you can stay as long as you like the following day, have a proper lie in and make the most of the tub, treatments etc.
Have a lovely time!

Getting around
A car is recommended, however, a lot of people come by public transport - the nearest train station is Polegate, which is about 15 mins by Uber or taxi, or you can get a number 98 bus from there to the village which I am told takes about half an hour. It's about 15 mins walk from the village to here. There's also a rural bus that you can book in advance via an app called Ride Pingo which I'm told is £4 a ride and goes to places pubic transport can't get to, as well as being useful for getting to and from the station.
