For the cooler months, the cottage has a lovely wood burner and electric radiators.
Salies de Béarn is a thriving town with a range of shops, lively cafés and bars and several excellent restaurants. The bustling market takes place on Thursday morning and you can pick up some local Brebis (sheep) cheese or Bayonne ham along with your fresh fruit and veg. Enjoy a stroll through the flower filled lanes or up to the Pain du Sucre to meet the llamas, donkeys and goats grazing there and take in the view over Salies with it's beautiful Béarnaise architecture.
The Béarn and Basque regions are abundant in historic sites, ancient châteaux, picturesque villages, lively markets and wonderful restaurants. The towns of Pau, Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz are all within easy reach, as are the fabulous beaches of the Atlantic coast and the stunning Pyrénées. Golf, fishing, horse riding, tennis, white water rafting and canoeing are all available locally and the area around Domaine Lavie is excellent for walking, running and cycling. For wine lovers, a visit to Salies de Béarn's last independent wine producer, Domaine Lapeyre et Guilhemas, is a must, together with visits to the neighbouring appellations of Jurançon and Irouléguy.
