About this place

Stepping Out of the Matrix, WAKE UP. Come see what happens when you stop accepting that everything has to be done the way you were told.

Most places advertise what they have. A swimming pool. A nice kitchen. A king-size bed. Perhaps, if things have gone particularly well, a tasteful photograph of a towel folded into the shape of a swan.

Cota House is a little harder to explain.

It sits inside Mangrove, a living, slightly eccentric experiment in figuring out how to live differently. The house is not simply accommodation dropped into a tropical property. It is part of the place itself—a place where houses, gardens, workshops, water systems, food, art and everyday life have been made, modified and rethought over time.

The idea behind Mangrove is simple: use what you have, question what you don't actually need, and find another way when the obvious one doesn't make sense. That philosophy is visible everywhere. Some things are carefully designed. Some are improvised. Some began as an experiment and somehow became permanent. This is not a resort assembled from a catalogue. It is a place that has grown through making.

Around Cota House, the jungle is not merely scenery outside the window. It is part of the experience. A food forest produces things that are actually used. Natural systems are built into the property rather than hidden behind the usual infrastructure. The natural pool is not a blue rectangle surrounded by plastic furniture pretending to be nature. The buildings themselves explore different ways of working with heat, shade, materials, shape and the landscape.

There is also a workshop, because apparently having a perfectly good place to sit wasn't enough. Things get built there. Furniture, structures, systems, experiments, strange solutions and occasionally things that nobody was quite sure would work when they started. The point is not professional perfection. The point is figuring things out.

That is what makes staying here different.

You are not staying in a conventional Airbnb where the experience begins and ends at the front door. You are staying inside a working environment where people are making, growing, experimenting and learning. There is a sense that the place is still becoming itself.

Mangrove was built around the belief that people are more capable than modern life sometimes allows them to remember. We have become remarkably good at buying solutions. Here, we are interested in what happens when you try to make one instead.

That philosophy extends beyond construction. It is about food, water, energy, gardens, materials, architecture and the small decisions of everyday life. It is about asking why something has to be done the usual way before deciding that it does.

The result is not a polished imitation of luxury.

It is something more difficult to manufacture: a place with a point of view.

Cota House gives you the chance to experience that place from within it. You can swim in the natural pool, walk through the food forest, explore the property, see the things being made, and simply enjoy the peculiar luxury of having space, nature and time around you.

You can also do absolutely nothing.

That is allowed.

In fact, after watching everyone else build things all day, it may be the most sensible solution available.

Cota House is for people who want something more interesting than another anonymous tropical rental. It is for people who are curious about how things work, who appreciate design that comes from necessity rather than decoration, and who don't mind discovering that a beautiful place can also be a work in progress.

Mangrove is not trying to recreate the world outside.

It is trying to find another way to live inside it.

I came to the jungle with more curiosity than resources, which turned out to be a useful combination. When something breaks, needs building, or simply seems unnecessarily complicated, I tend to wonder whether there might be another way. Over the years, that has led me into building houses and furniture, making food, experimenting with energy and water, growing things, working with materials, and generally making whatever seems necessary at the time. But the point was never simply to make things. It is to become less dependent on systems that are increasingly designed to do everything for us. The more we can understand, make, repair, grow, and solve for ourselves, the more freedom we have to decide how we want to live. I like the idea of stepping a little outside the machinery of everyday life—not by rejecting the modern world, but by becoming capable of functioning without needing it for every small thing. I don't have a grand theory for all of this. I just prefer to look at what we have, question what we are told is necessary, and see what we can do with it. Mangrove grew out of that habit.
