Cozumel Travel Mistakes: Things to Avoid from a Local Host
After hosting thousands of travelers at Stingray Villa, I have seen almost every vacation blunder imaginable. Most visitors mean well, but they fall into the same predictable traps the moment they step off the ferry.
Skip the Scooter Rentals
If you don't ride a motorcycle at home, don't learn on our streets. Scooter accidents are the single most common way tourists end up in our local clinic. Hidden stop signs and tricky traffic make them a bad gamble. Grab a taxi or try the new Eiby app instead. Always confirm your fare before you step inside the car.
Respect the Ocean
Cozumel has two distinct sides. Our western coastline is calm, protected by reefs, and perfect for snorkeling. The wild eastern side offers stunning views, but the undertows and riptides are dangerous. Never swim on empty east-side beaches. When you go into the water, wear a rash guard or reef-safe sunscreen. Regular sunscreens bleach and destroy our living coral.
Ditch the Port Bubble
Do not spend your trip inside the cruise terminal buying overpriced souvenirs or eating at US chain restaurants. Walk five blocks into town, order a cold beer, and sample authentic Mexican seafood. You will save money, support local families, and experience the real rhythm of our island.
