Skiathos’ famous Kastro - the Greek word for castle - is a monument of extraordinary, awe-inspiring beauty. Due to constant pirate invasions in the mid 14th century, the Skiathos inhabitants decided to leave their ancient, main city, and move to the northern part of the island for safety. Taking advantage of its natural fortification, they chose a point of high land jutting out into the sea, a large rocky promontory on which to build Kastro as their new capital and keep the population safe from attacks. Built on this imposing mass of rock, the fortress seems to be hanging above the sea. Its panoramic view, as well as its towering walls, reinforced with casemates and cannons made it impenetrable.

The fort’s gate, topped with a butte from side to side, was linked to the outside world through a movable, wooden bridge. In case of emergency, the bridge was drawn inside Kastro, thereby blocking any enemy access. In front of, and above the fort’s main entrance, a gallery, a turret, a rooftop with casemates, as well as a small balcony from which to ward off invaders called the “zematistra” provided further fortification and protection.

After 400 years, in 1829, the inhabitants gave up Kastro permanently to settle back in the island’s main town as we know it today. On their way back, they not only took their personal belongings, but any building materials such as wood, window and door frames useful for rebuilding their former homes in Skiathos town. Having dismantled and removed entire roofs, Kastro was abruptly left in a desolate state. Only 2 parish churches of its approximately 20 churches and 500 households, remain preserved today. At the time, the area’s population ranged between 1000 and 1500 residents.
