There is no public transit on Hilton Head Island — a rental car is essential. Traffic on US-278 (William Hilton Parkway) backs up badly in summer, especially on Friday afternoons. Use the Cross Island Parkway (toll: $1.25 cash or EZPass) to bypass the worst congestion between the south and north ends.

Sea Pines Plantation charges a $5–$10 day-pass fee at the gate to access Harbour Town and the Forest Preserve. Keep cash on hand, as the Cross Island Parkway toll plaza accepts cash and EZPass but not credit cards.

Don't leave without trying a Low Country Boil — shrimp, blue crab, corn, sausage, and new potatoes simmered in Old Bay seasoning. Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks is another local institution worth a visit for the freshest local catch served simply.

Hilton Head summers are hot and humid (85–95°F) with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, typically brief but intense. Plan beach time and outdoor activities for mornings, schedule indoor or shaded activities for 2–4 PM, and always carry insect repellent for marsh-side trails — no-see-ums are relentless at dawn and dusk.

Alligators are common throughout the island — in ponds, lagoons, golf course water hazards, and even occasionally on walking paths. Keep a safe distance of at least 15 feet, never feed them, and keep pets and children away from any body of fresh or brackish water.

Hilton Head has a strong Gullah Geechee cultural heritage — the descendants of West African enslaved people who developed a unique language and culture here. Visit the Gullah Heritage Trail Tours or the Coastal Discovery Museum to learn this important history respectfully, rather than treating it as background scenery.
