The NJ Governor signed a law into effect that rescinds and replaces a law that took effect in Oct 2018 to require property owners and OTAs to collect and remit sales and room/hotel taxes. But what is interesting about the replacement law is that only property owners that book their own rentals (direct book) are exempt from the taxes! The OTAs such as Airbnb, Vrbo and the others must still collect and remit the taxes!

Guests around the world are learning about how the online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Airbnb, Vrbo, TripAdvisor and HomeAway are taking advantage of guests and property owners with exorbitant and increasingly higher service and booking fees. The math in support of the Book Direct movement is already strong, but it just got better in the state of New Jersey, USA!

So if you want the least expensive vacation possible in New Jersey, your vacation was just discounted by between 11 and 12 percent when you Book Direct! Add to that the additional sliding scale Service Fee charged by the OTAs (generally 5% - 12 %), and making a direct book reservation for your next vacation in NJ becomes a significant way to save!

Here is an article, explaining the law, signed into law in Aug 2019:
