The Writer's Cabin is a one-room homestead cabin with an attached vintage trailer and studio shed on a remote 5-acre Mojave Desert expanse. Wonder Valley is a community filled with artists, writers and musicians looking for quiet desert magic. The cabin is 15 mins from the East entrance of Joshua Tree National Park and 10 mins from fine dining and amenities in Twentynine Palms. Please be aware that while most find it comfortable, it does NOT have an indoor bathroom.
The cabin has everything you need for a tiny house adventure or solo creative experience: A soft full bed, an outside clawfoot tub to soak in while catching epic sunsets, and stargazing on the porch with a glass of whiskey. Set up for long stays, it has great heat & A/C. You can cook a full meal on the stove and do some laundry in the washer/dryer. When you are ready to curl up and unwind, there's a 53" Smart TV all ready to go.
Please note that all utilities (water, sewer pumping, internet, garbage) are included EXCEPT electric. Your usage will be billed according to usage records from SCE and will be billed monthly or deducted from your deposit if staying shorter than one month.
The property is very quiet with zero light pollution. It's surrounded on three sides by government land. There's a beautiful wash to go walking in that’s BLM land just behind the property.
The wi-fi is the fastest we can get out here. It’s not like the city but it's fast enough to stream and work.
If you want a break from isolation, Grnd Sqrl & Kitchen in the Desert have great food and a chill vibe only 10 mins away. Campbell Hill Bakery on the downtown stretch has divine pastries and sandwiches. If you want to catch some music or hang with Wonder Valley locals, the Palms Bar and Restaurant is a couple miles away. (Call ahead – they are on "desert time.") You are 30 mins from the town of Joshua Tree and 40 mins to Pioneertown and Pappy and Harriets.
Well behaved dogs are welcome but please be mindful that this is a wild area with rattlesnakes and coyotes. Dogs are not allowed on park trails so keep that in mind if your pup is likely to do damage when you are gone. Please keep cats or other animals at home.
I have one neighbor you may see 3 acres away but he has a trailer in front of his cabin that allows privacy. There's a small local airport a few miles away so you may hear the occasional small aircraft on the weekends. ABSOLUTELY NO EVENTS OR PARTIES. My neighbors are out here for peace and quiet and I must respect this. Fires are ONLY allowed Oct - May and ONLY if there is no wind. (You will burn the entire desert down as it's a high wildfire area.)

Film and TV director. Love good food, wine, people, and new experiences. I came to the California High Desert on a silent meditation retreat after my first film was released in 2015. I fell in love with quiet and magic and decided to make it my sanctuary away from L.A.

If you want a break from isolation, there are a few great restaurants: Kitchen in the Desert, Grnd Sqrl, and Mara. Campbell Hill Bakery on the downtown stretch has divine pastries and sandwiches. House Rules
1. Sound travels far in the desert so no events or loud music, please. Like all other Airbnbs in the area, we are subject to a $1000 fine for noise violations and allowing more guests than we are licensed to host. That fine will be passed on to you.
2. No smoking in the cabin. If you smoke outside, please dispose of safely. This is a HIGH WILDFIRE AREA.
3. No fires June through September as there is a county fire ban most of this time. Please extinguish the firepit thoroughly and do not leave it unattended.
4. One dog only. Keep dogs off furniture. Please bring a dog bed. No cats or other animals are permitted.
5. Pick up dog poop on all five acres. I find a lot of dog owners assume because it's wilderness area they don't need to pick up after their dog but just like the city if you leave poop around, there is dog poop everywhere. There is a $75 fee for any poop left on the acreage.
6. Do not trespass on neighbor properties. People are really sensitive about that out here. This means staying out of abandoned homesteads, as tempting as they are to explore. If you want to know where it's government land and legal to walk, see the house manual or message me.
7. Don't block the driveway and park where indicated.
8. Security cameras are on the outside of the cabin. Please contact me about how to disable them for your stay.
9. Water is expected to last one month with normal use for two people. If you require a water delivery earlier than that it is $140/truckload. It is $300 for an emergency truckload so check your water level weekly.
10. Electricity is not included in monthly stays. It will be requested by month if you are staying multiple months or deducted from your deposit if you are only staying a month.

30 days or less: 50% is refundable. 7 days or less: non-refundable. Security deposit is always 100% refundable.
Notes
I am a local resident and artist and this rental supports my art life. I am not a property management company like a lot of high desert rentals – or affluent! – so please treat my home as you would a friend's house. Also: thanks for not supporting out-of-town investors who are displacing our community. xoxo
Since cleaning fees are a hot button issue: I ensure cleaners receive 100% of your cleaning fee. A long-term stay requires a deep clean and $150 is the least a good cleaner will take (and deserves) to go out this remote and clean a small house.
Please do not book the cabin for any kind of gathering or for more than two people. Like all other Airbnbs in the area, we are prevented from hosting events or parties and are subject to a $1000 fine for noise violations and allowing more guests than we are licensed to host. That fine will be passed on to you.
My pet fee is reasonable but it is for ONE dog only. No cats or other animals, please. Official Support Animals are approved only with a description of what task the service animal has been trained to perform. Emotional Support Animals are not charged a pet fee but a separate $500 refundable deposit WILL be required before the address is issued.
