There really isn't any official designation since it was primarily coined for tourists.  But it's most commonly used for the area stretching from Puerto Morelos south to Tulum.

We have been owners of our condo for 24 years.  Playa was just a sleepy little fishing village at that time.  My how things have changed. We have all the modern conveniences that you could possibly desire and still enjoy the natural beauty of Playa del Carmen.  Our condo is a one of a kind, oversized, corner unit within 50 feet of the beach.  You will really enjoy the view from our balcony.  We hope that you enjoy this little piece of paradise as much as we do.
