On your drive to Isla Holbox is a small town called Solferino. Just a sleepy little village. But their claim to fame is a 1000 year old tree. You will see signs on the highway (not big) pointing to the right, if I remember correctly in both English and Spanish. (El Arbole Viejo). The tree is right on the dirt road surrounded by some very enterprising locals with their own little "nature preserve". You don't need to pay anyone to see the tree. It has a lush jungle north of the town, there is aquatic and underwater vegetation in wetlands composed with brackish coastal lagoons and marshes with plenty of red mangrove and seagrass.
