Akumal is a 30 mn drive south of Playa del Carmen. Past Paa Mul and Puerto Aventuras. Great snorkeling but bring your water shoes, the dead coral is sharp!

The diverse plants support an amazing variety of animal species. Mammals of the deep jungle habitats include spider and howler monkeys, coatimundis or "tejons" (a furry brown relative of raccoons with a long nose and a striped tail), foxes, opossums, raccoons, tapirs, anteaters, porcupines, armadillos, deer, and jaguar.
