It's important to plan your trip to Cozumel to maximize your experience.
The best way to Cozumel is via the Ferry(s). The departure pier is just a short distance from the condo. You can see in the photo below just how close it is. There is no need to purchase tickets in advance, you may buy them whenever you're ready to go.
Getting from the mainland to Cozumel is relatively pretty simple on the Cozumel ferry. Here is all the information you need to know on how to take the ferry from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel. (See also our video below!) There are now two companies that service the crossing.
Before you head over to Cozumel, you should think about how you want to experience it. Here are 3 options.
You want to explore the island on your own
You want to go snorkeling
You want to look around the town, do some shopping, grab lunch or dinner and drinks
I don't recommend the 3rd option. The town looks the same as Playa del Carmen, same merchandise, and same food. No reason to go unless you want the experience of the ferry and the view.
If you want to snorkel, I suggest you work with one of the many snorkel companies. They will arrange to pick you up at the ferry dock on Cozumel. Here's one example, I've never used them, but I've heard good things. You should also check with our concierge desk at the condo complex. It's in the office space across the garden from our condo.
Now that you have your vehicle, your snorkel gear, and your sunscreen, your heading off. Don't worry, you can't get lost. There's one main road that goes around the island. Here are some things you may want to see:
Cozumel is famous for its magnificient coral reefs. This makes way for the most amazing snorkel and diving experiences available in the entire Caribbean. Cozumel is full of history and culture and the things you can learn here will truly amaze you.
You MUST drive along the east coast of Cozumel. There are just a few bars and maybe one or two houses. But the surf and beaches along there are beautiful. Don't swim unless there are signs saying it's safe...it's very rough.
After a fun day in the sun, there's nothing better than a delicious meal and cold drink! Be sure to stop by Ray's Sandbar for your choice of authentic Mexican cuisine, and the cool refreshing taste of one of our margaritas, piña coladas, or soft drinks.
If you're really crazy about ruins, then stop at San Gervasio. Otherwise skip it. Honestly, they aren't very impressive. Certainly, not as impressive as the Playacar ruins directly across from our condo
When most people think of Cozumel ruins they're likely conjuring up in their minds those iconic images of sites like Chichen Itza or Tulum. While we don't want to spoil it for you, it is important to start off by letting you know that the San Gervasio ruins in Cozumel are, ehm, more humble in nature.
