The Oriented Nature Reserve "Isole dello Stagnone di Marsala" is a jewel of western Sicily, famous for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity and historical importance. It covers an area of about 2,000 hectares and includes the Stagnone Lagoon and four fascinating islands: Mozia, Santa Maria, Schola and Isola Grande. The reserve is a sanctuary for many species of plants and animals.
The Stagnone Lagoon is the largest in Sicily and is characterised by its shallow and calm waters, which create an ideal environment for an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna. The shallow waters, ranging from a few centimetres to a few metres deep, give the lagoon a unique appearance, particularly during sunset, when the light reflects off the surface of the water creating spectacular plays of colour.
In addition to its naturalistic value, the reserve is a place of great historical importance. The island of Mozia, with its Phoenician remains, is an archaeological site of international significance. This combination of nature and history makes the reserve a unique place to visit, where every corner tells an ancient story.
The reserve offers a wide variety of activities for visitors: the many bird species present make the reserve a paradise for birdwatchers. Boat excursions allow visitors to explore the lagoon and the islands, admiring the landscape and visiting the archaeological sites of Mozia. It is also possible to visit the salt pans, which offer a unique spectacle, especially at sunset, and to learn about the traditional process of salt production.
