The Many Beaches of Martha's Vineyard
Marthas Vineyard Popular Beaches
Martha’s Vineyard is home to coastlines of sandy, rocky, wavy and calm beaches. A vacation on Martha’s Vineyard is on most travelers bucket list. When it is time for you to check this item off, don’t forget to visit these beautiful beaches. Different beaches are
better for different occasions.
South Beach – Katama – Walking Distance from Our Home
Best beach for surfing because it is known for its large waves. It is one of the most popular beaches for spending the day. The sand is soft and perfect for building sand castles. There is a volleyball net and you can usually join in a game. This beach can be seen in the movie Jaws produced by Steven Spielberg in 1974. There is a bike path that runs from downtown Edgartown thru Katama for perfect beach day. Free parking is available. There is a lifeguard on duty and there are also bathrooms.
Stop along the way at Katama General Store for sandwiches, snacks and drinks. We love the scones, especially the orange cranberry.
Ink well Beach – Oak Bluffs
Ink well Beach is one of the best known beaches with shallow water and few waves.
The sunrise on this beach is magnificent. It is across from Waban Park in Oak Bluffs. It is walking distance to Main Street where there are great restaurants and places to shop. It is also within walking distance to the ferry.
Menemsha Beach – Chillmark
Menemsha Beach is known for great sunset. It is also known for gentle waters and
is good for swimming and fishing. There is a lifeguard on duty. The beach faces northwest and the sun dips into the Vineyard Sound at the end of the day. People gather on the beach to have dinner and watch the beautiful sunset. Our family loves to take out cooked lobster from Larsen’s Fish Market or Menemsha Fish Market, picnic on
the beach and watch the sky change colors. Other options for take out are the back door of the Homeport Restaurant and the Galley
Light House Beach – Edgartown
Light House beach is in Edgartown at Starbucks neck off North Water street. It juts into
the town harbor, is family friendly and good for children. You can find sea shells while watching sail boats in the harbor. You can also visit the light house. This beach is very popular for wedding photos.
