Location
Avola is an ideal holiday destination for friends or families of all ages. The beach has a shallow sea which makes it popular with families with smaller children. For older visitors, the town has much to offer: fascinating history, lovely Baroque architecture and an enthusiastic appreciation of local food and wine, with some excellent restaurants and cafés.
The famous red wine, Nero d’Avola, takes its name from the town and there are numerous festivals celebrating regional delicacies. These vary from the festival for almonds, to celebrations around wild boar, tuna and even swordfish. An excellent excuse for a feast throughout the year.
For people who want a day in the countryside, then a trip to the Riserva Naturale di Cava Grande del Cassibile (a 30-minute drive) is a great option. In addition to beautiful hiking trails, the reserve has a deep gorge, known as Sicily’s Grand Canyon, which is up to 250m deep. The river at the bottom has created a series of clear, rock pools where visitors can enjoy a swim. The reserve is also home to a peaceful beach, Gelsomineto Oasis Beach, which is a quiet alternative seaside option. Catania’s international airport is a 1-hour drive from the apartment.
