Location Perfection! MORE than a "private room"... ENJOY the ENTIRE house! Short walk to amazing food, drinks, shopping, entertainment, AND lightrail!
Vacation Home hosted by Gary
2 Guests . 1 Bedroom . 1 Bathroom

Overview

The Stumptown Room is filled with Portland, Oregon personality! Located upstairs with a cozy charm, a brand new full bed, northern light and all the comforts for 2, AC (summer), high speed WiFi, and TV with an Amazon Firestick including Netflix & Hulu. Having the rest of my home to enjoy, more of a "private room" meets an "entire home" feel, makes this a perfect getaway! There is one other Airbnb guest room in the house. And the garden out back is perfect for relaxing including a hot tub. I reside in a private apartment in the basement... the house is truly for my guests!

I've lived in my 1925 craftsman over 22 years; it is my castle that I share with 2 adorable pups. My guests find a unique & special experience here, welcoming & relaxing, charming & authentic, a "real home" with all the inviting comforts. Most guests comment that it is unlike any "vacation stay" they've had and one to be remembered.

Cuddle up with popcorn and a movie in front of a warming fire, a romantic dinner at the table, create your favorite eats in the kitchen. Each of the guest rooms are themed with creativity and the house filled with personality. Even the large shared bathroom on the main floor has it's "vintage" appeal.

A 24 hour "bistro bar" with tea, cider, hot chocolate, popcorn... cold cereals & oatmeal, a Keurig coffee maker, milk, juice, creamer, and fruit for a quick morning boost. There is even laundry available for guests staying 7 days or more (a small fee for shorter stays).

My garden is an oasis created by my late husband where you'll find bountiful plant varieties, flowers, and possibly a hummingbird or two. The tranquil scenery with relaxing seating & lounging areas accented by small water fountains and a fire pit ... it's the perfect place for morning coffee, a favorite book, meditation, and engaging conversations shared with other guests over a glass of Oregon's wines or local brews.

** Access is a breeze with a key pad on the front door. Late night Check In is fine with advance notice. Luggage drop off before the 3pm Check In can also be coordinated after 12pm as well as leaving luggage downstairs after Check Out if departing Portland later in the day, again with advance planning.
** Dogs (sorry, no cats or other pets) are truly welcome! However, they need to remain with owner(s) at all times and cannot be left in guest rooms unattended. Note: If a pup is comfortable and calm being left alone (without barking or crying), guests need to provide a crate when making plans to venture out and about without your four-legged companion.
** There is plenty of safe street parking!

Whenever possible, I love to chat, share stories, and most of all laugh with my guests; to me, this defines a "host" rather than a "landlord." Although at times I may be rushing between auditions, performances, projects, social engagements, or simply creating in my workshop. I'm also guardian caregiver for my father, Gary Sr. who lives here as well.

This IS the location! You can see the MAX lightrail station from my front door complete with a Nike bike rental kiosk! Interstate 5 has both on/off ramps (north & south) 2 minutes away.
Walk to the awesome, hip, groovy, "Portlandia Style" Historic Mississippi District in just 10 minutes with bars, live music, galleries, food carts, restaurants, coffee, breweries, donuts, ice cream, dispensaries, and one of a kind little shops. Even closer, at the end of my street you'll find several restaurants (one with dozens of brews/ciders on tap), coffee and fresh bagels, yoga studio, bank, convenience store and more. Ten minutes on MAX lightRail into the heart of downtown Portland with stops at the MODA Center sports arena, convention center, Pearl District, and Old Town along the way.

Car, lightrail, biking or walking. You will have plenty of options getting exactly where you want to go from the convenience of Urban Haven in North Portland, Nopo!
As we say here ... "plane to train!"

** The stairs are a little narrow and a tad steep compared to most ... typical old 1925 craftsman. Guests with stairs challenges please consider the Prescott Room on the main floor.
** In an effort to be mindful of energy use, I keep the house on the cooler side on winter days, a bit warmer on summer afternoons, as most guests are out and about. Each room has an additional heater if needed, box fan, and an individual AC unit (summer).
** As mentioned, I do have several guest rooms in my home. This provides the magic of guests from around the world meeting each other while staying... and departing with new friends and one of a kind memories!

Owner

Gary here... a very friendly, easy going, and welcoming fellow who truly loves the “traveler’s experience” both as a host to guests (FabStayz & Airbnb) from around the world and being off on my own adventures! My first guests arrived in November of 2013 and I've since opened my front door to over 1700 others from 29 countries. Each of my guest rooms are cozy, welcoming, and unique. I have a simple goal to provide a welcoming, comfortable, and genuine place to call "home" when visiting our beautiful and vibrant city. My guests are welcome to enjoy a movie in front of the fire in the living room, have a candlelit dinner in the dining room, cook up a tasty meal in the kitchen, and enjoy relaxing in the hot tub & garden surrounded by fountains, flowers, greenery, wind-chimes and most of all, serenity.
I'm really just a renaissance man. I've worked as a high school teacher, a behavioral health therapist, small business owner, gardener, builder/thinker/crafter, and most passionately as a professional actor on stage, in film & television for 40 years, musical theatre is my passion. I'm also a grateful “friend of Bill W."
I've always enjoyed meeting new people. Local theatre, music, books, restaurants, being outdoors, gardening, movies, are just a few pieces of my life. I also love a road trip, traveling anywhere really, especially “water destinations" (ocean, river, lake, stream, or pool!). I’m definitely a “sunshine guy” whether it's a drive in my convertible, on a hike, digging in the garden, laying out at the river, or just a walk nearby or around town.
My home, URBAN HAVEN as I call it, is my castle! I share it with my two adorable pups, SeeBee & Mannie; they are really my kids. I'm also caregiver for my dad, Gary Sr., who spent a decade on the streets of Santa Cruz County until 7 years of searching led me to him. Dad is a quiet and extremely kind man enjoying our home together and grateful for his 2nd chance at life.
I take extreme pride in my wonderful house of 22 years. I welcome every guest with a smile and a "make yourself at home, relax & enjoy" invitation. I'm happy to help with recommendations of things to do and see, let guests explore on their own, and even get suggestions from my guests about "what's new" that I haven't even seen yet myself. Portland has SO MUCH to offer!
I consider myself a very genuine and authentic gentleman with a healthy sense of humor, a goofy and even mildly devilish side, who is comfortable in both work boots and a tuxedo.
My simple motto ... the only way to true happiness & real freedom is by doing “the right thing,” not because I have to but because I want to!

House Rules
House Agreements
• Relax & Enjoy … From comfort to cleanliness, please leave it how you found it, think of my home as a wonderful getaway, a true “home away from home” in Portland, Oregon.
• ALL are Welcome… I honor every guest for who they are, regardless; it’s that simply. I ask each and every guest in my home to do the same not only for me but for each other when staying.
• Sharing & Respect… My home is the perfect place to meet other guest travelers, sharing use of the common areas such as the living & dining rooms, kitchen and bath. Please be respectful of others staying. Quieter Time is from 10pm to 9am. The house being 95 yrs old the walls may seem a bit, understandable, thin to those more sensitive to sound like myself; I provide fans in every room for a little “white noise” if needed.
• Bathroom… Guests share a large, bright, well situated bathroom; it works beautifully! Each guest room has a place for personal “finishing touches” while getting ready for your adventures.
• Shoes… Only the 2nd floor rooms are “no shoes” with a little shoe cubby provided at the bottom of the stairs.
• Pets… I have 2 wonderful little pups who enjoy other 4-legged friendly travelers that we know about in advance. Dogs only. 3 Points: 1) Well mannered & housebroken are a given and I ask that pets are never left unattended in the house unless they are used to and comfortable with being crated in the room for short periods if you are out. 2) I have a cherished garden; please keep an eye out for trampling, digging, and clean up after they do their business. 3) Male dogs must be neutered. **Please do not feed my little ones “people food.”
• Parking… There is plenty of safe street parking. As with any location, don’t leave valuables in sight and lock your vehicles. Please do not park in the driveway.
• Smoking… You are welcome to smoke out in the back yard. There is a covered porch when it’s raining. Marijuana (only) is legal in Oregon and ok to smoke on the property. NO other drugs!
• Drinking & Responsibility… We have an abundance of incredible breweries, wines, and distilleries in Portland; feel free to enjoy them here at the house and out about town. Please drink responsibly; public transit is ½ block away, Uber, Lyft, taxi, et. Are ALL great choices!
• People… If you have friends in Portland please check with me in advance if you would like them to visit the house, NO overnight additional guests. Do not give the doorcode to anyone. No parties or events unless discussed before booking.
• Children… I love kids! Let me know in advance if you are traveling with a child under 8 yrs; the house isn’t suitable for toddlers due to the stairs.
• Stairs… The house was built in 1925 with somewhat narrow & steep stairs to the upstairs rooms. This is simply something to keep in mind. And as is true with “old gems” there are a few squeaky boards. There are 4 stairs up to the front door and 4 off the back porch with another 2 into the yard.
• My Label Maker & Laminator… I LOVE them both! =) You’ll find helpful little signs and notes all around the house making it very easy to find what you need. I have all the simple necessities from a clothing steamer to a blood pressure cuff… with most everything in between.
• My Father… Gary Sr. is an incredibly kind, gentle, and caring man with a heart to match. I am his legal guardian and grateful to have finally found him and given him a home. He takes his meals in the house and uses the restroom. I ask all to be patient and understanding with dad; he’s seen and been through so much in life. He’s not the first to say hello but with always respond.
