LITTLE HOUSE on the HILL - Gorge Getaway Home Base
864 Sqft Vacation Home hosted by Katie
4 Guests . 1 Bedroom . 1 Bathroom

This little house started life as a woodworking shop. When we outgrew it, we made it into a guest house. It may be imperfect, but it's perfectly adorable. We have a peek of Mt. Hood from the yard and lovely territorial views. At night, you can enjoy the beauty of a Milky Way sky far from city light pollution.

Come. Enjoy. Relax.

We sometimes make exceptions to "No Pets" with conditions. Please ask before booking.
No smoking in the house.
More important details below.

Situated on five acres near the main house, in a quiet rural neighborhood, this bright, cheery space is about 10 minutes, (5.5 miles) from White Salmon's charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and grocery. Hood River is about 20 minutes (10 miles) away - just a short hop across the Hood River toll bridge ($2). It's a restful country retreat or a practical home-base for your Gorge adventures or business travel. It's a quiet spot great for relaxing and as a home-base for Gorge adventures, but if you want to be in the thick of things, it's probably not the best choice.

The house consists of two large rooms with a connecting open doorway. One side includes the living and dining areas, and kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, and electric oven and stove. The second side contains the sleeping area, bathroom, and closet/laundry. The sleeping area has a queen bed, small dresser, bedside stand, and curtain which allows for bedroom privacy while maintaining bathroom access for all. There is no door on the bedroom which may not be ideal for those with infants, small children, or snoring issues. The floors are laminate, ceramic, and vinyl composite tile.

Although the space is ideal for two people sharing the queen-size bed, a second queen bed, or two single cots are available upon request. We usually put the extra bed in the dining area and adjust the position of the dining table and chairs so everything will fit. We also have a Pack 'n Play play yard with a full-size removable bassinet. The bassinet weight limit is 15 pounds; the play yard has a weight limit of 30 pounds. Please let us know what you need before arriving so we can set it up for you.. (Please also see the layout notes.)

You may hear coyotes at night or doves cooing in the trees. Nature is all around us. If the sight of a daddy-long-legs fills you with fright, best not stay here.

If you want something specific, please ask. We'll do our best to accommodate. We want you to have a stress-free stay. If you arrive and realize that you forgot to make a request, whether for bed set-up, an additional guest, or any other detail, don't hesitate to let us know. Give us an opportunity to be helpful. We like doing that!

Getting around

USING YOUR VEHICLE We're 4.2 miles from White Salmon. A car is the best way to get around. There is no regular public transport in this rural neighborhood, but it's an easy 4.2 mile, 10 minute trip to White Salmon where you can access Highway 14 that runs along the Washington shore, or cross the bridge to Hood River, OR, and I-84. TAXIS, TRAIN, BUS, and RIDE SERVICES There are a few local taxis in White Salmon, WA and Hood River, OR. Uber and Lyft are usually available. AmTrak has an unstaffed station in Bingen, WA (about 7 miles away). There's a Greyhound Bus station on the other side of the Columbia River in Hood River, OR (about 10 miles away). MAJOR AIRPORT The nearest international airport is PDX in Portland, OR (about 76 miles away). REGIONAL AIRPORTS There are 3 regional airports within 30 miles of the Little House. All are open to the public. None have control towers: • The Ken Jernstedt Airfield owned by the Port of Hood River is about 15 miles south across the Columbia River in Oregon • The Columbia Gorge Regional Airport at Dallesport, WA, owned by the Port of The Dalles (OR), is about 20 miles east. • Cascade Locks State Airport is about 27 miles southwest on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.

My husband and I love living in The Columbia River Gorge. Having worked for a number of years as artisans, we know and value the regional community. We enjoy getting out in nature and especially like to hike.

Our Little House is our way of sharing the magic of this place with others.

We offer weekly and monthly discounts. You will see them when you enter reservation dates and view the pricing.

Do read previous guest reviews and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or special requests. I want everyone who books with me to have a positive experience.

- Please use the changing pad provided or otherwise protect the furnishings when changing diapers.

- Please ask before using the cob oven so we can give you tools that you'll need for tending the fire and confirm that there are no active burn restrictions.
- Do not use during burn bans

- Please report damage or breakage immediately, even if you were not the cause. Our main concern is keeping things in good repair.
- If you cause damage beyond normal wear and tear, you agree to be responsible for the cost of repair or replacement.

- After use, please place all game pieces into the game box from which they came.

- Receiving mail, parcels, or other deliveries while you are a guest will not establish residency. Residency is established with a long term contract.

- Please park in the designated parking area.
- Do not block the driveway or turn-around.

I sometimes allow pets. We need to have a little chat to share expectations before you book with a pet. In general:
- Clean up after them - no leaving poop in the house yard or on the parking flat. You can put your poop bags in the large can marked, "Trash" on the patio. If you need bags, ask.
- If your pet sleeps on the bed, please toss one of the woven cotton blankets I have in a basket in the big room on the bed to help minimize hair and odor - same thing for couch-cuddlers. Just throw the used blankets in with the laundry when you leave.
- No water bowls on the laminate floor. One unmopped spill of water will force the replacement of the entire laminate floor.
- No free-roaming. the fenced yard is the only place your pet should be: No terrorizing the wildlife. Pets are at risk from red-tailed hawks, coyotes, bobcats and other predators. Pets can become lost as we are surrounded by forest land. One excited deer-pursuit and it's over. Also, beware of the fields and livestock poo as some pets simply can't resist rolling in it.
- Wipe your pet's muddy feet off before turning them loose in the house.
- You agree to pay for damage from chewing, peeing, digging, etc..
- Pets may not be left in the house or in a vehicle unattended.

- Unless you are staying for more than a week, please don't water the plants. If you are staying for multiple weeks, you will receive watering instructions.
- Do not move any plant with a floor stand. Be cautious when opening and shutting the window coverings as you may accidentally break a nearby plant.

- Follow the instructions provided in the on-premise House Book for heating, cooling.
- If a fire or carbon monoxide detector alarm sounds and you are unable to determine if it is a false alarm, vacate the premises and contact the owners immediately. If you determine that it is a false alarm due to low battery, remove the battery to silence the unit and contact the owners immediately so the battery can be replaced.

- No Smoking inside the house. PLEASE.
- We prefer no smoking anywhere on the property, but if you must smoke, smoke DO NOT smoke inside the house.
- Smoking outside should be confined to the patio or inside your car. Great caution must be used during fire season, mid-June through the end of October. One spark could be disastrous.
- Please don't toss cigarette butts outside. They can start a fire. Little animals may eat them and be harmed.

- Let us know if you need a supply, used the last of any supplies, or if the supplies are very nearly empty. We try to inventory each time we clean, but a “heads-up” is a huge help, especially during the busiest times of the year.

- Before you leave, please tidy-up by leaving the house similar to the condition in which you found it.
- Make an effort to wipe spills from floors, fixtures, counters, cabinets, walls, and furniture as they occur. If you spill something that might stain, even slightly, please let us know so we can give the spilled-on item special attention when we clean.
- Take care not to allow water to remain on the laminate flooring. If it is damaged, the entire floor will have to be replaced.
- Do not use towels or washcloths for household cleaning. Cleaning rags are on the shelf in the laundry room.
- Do not leave used towels, especially wet ones, on the furniture. If you will not be laundering them during your stay, place them in the laundry basket provided.
- Please wash dishes before departure. You can leave them in the dish drainer, but please don’t leave a stack of dirty dishes in the sink. Position the dish drainer so the water drains into the sink, not onto the counter or floor.
- Please refrain from rearranging the furniture or moving lamps or other items. Leave things as you found them.

- There is a large trash can on the patio, please don't stack up trash in the house. If the kitchen or bathroom trash is full, empty it into the large trash can in the patio area.
- Please, no feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, diapers, or contraceptive items down the toilet. We are on a septic system and these items are bad for it. Use the trash receptacles provided.
- Do not put toilet bowl cleaning blocks in the toilet. Most are bad for the septic and the blue ones stain the fixture.
- If there is an accident or spillage of blood, bodily fluids, or feces, please enlist our help. We can clean and sanitize quickly and will not charge you to do so.

- Please return the television and VCR remotes to the TV stand before departure.
- Please don't disable channels or owner subscriptions without asking.

- Please don't run water needlessly. We are on a well. Being mindful of use preserves the well pump as well as the water supply. No smokingNo petsNo parties or eventsCheck-in is anytime after 4:00 PM

• Winter access can be difficult. 4WD is advised. We can't always keep the driveway clear. Worst-case is having to park near the road and walk about a thousand feet to the house.
• Nature is all around us, so there may be turkeys, bunnies, deer, spiders, lizards, garden snakes etc..
• Bears, coyotes, and cougars inhabit the nearby woodlands. In the 20+ years we've lived here, we've never seen them on our property.
• We are on well water and septic. Water pressure is adequate, but not like in the city. Please, no feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, diapers, or contraceptive items down the toilet.
• Internet is usually OK for streaming, but can sometimes lag.
