Location
Avola is a popular holiday destination, as it has everything for families and young people: wide beaches with the sparkling sea, fascinating history, lovely Baroque architecture and an enthusiastic appreciation of local food and wine. The famous red wine, Nero d’Avola, takes its name from the town and there are numerous festivals celebrating regional delicacies. These vary from the festival for almonds, to celebrations around wild boar, tuna and even swordfish. An excellent excuse for a feast throughout the year. This lively town has much to offer in terms of amenities, good restaurants and shops.
For people who want a day in the countryside, then a trip to the Riserva Naturale di Cava Grande del Cassibile (a 30-minute drive) is a great option. This protected area has a deep river gorge, known as Sicily’s Grand Canyon, which is up to 250m deep. The river at the bottom has created a series of clear, rock pools where visitors can enjoy a swim. The reserve is also home to a peaceful beach, Gelsomineto Oasis Beach, which is a quiet alternative. Catania’s international airport is a 1-hour drive from the apartment.
