Spiders. Spiders give loads of people the heebie-jeebies and for the most part, their presence is a good thing BUT there are some to be wary of round these parts. If you see a spider that looks the slightest bit intimidating, don't fool with it.

Black Widow. This is common and easily spotted. You don't need to verify the red hour-glass on it's tummy to know it's a black widow. They're black and very orb shaped. They can and do get into homes but I find them outside in storage areas and potted plants or inside of masonry blocks type of places. They like to be protected and in the dark. Just be careful if you're rummaging through outside stuff.

Brown Spider and Brown Recluse Spider. The brown recluse is not particularly common but the brown more so round here and both pack a serious punch. It's big enough and scary-looking enough that you're going to want to run away. This is another Arizona creature I've never come across personally but I do know this fellow is out there.

Tarantula. Giant-size furry spider but not a bad guy! Will you see on in midtown Tucson? Nope. I never have. Get nearer the desert perimeter and you might. They can bite but their venom is very weak -- they're mostly all show :-).

There's some other nasty spiders around but the chances you'll come across one at Garcia or Glenn House, would be about the same as winning the lottery and they all have an obvious presence that you're not going to warm to and want to make friends. You might come across some small spiders and daddy-long-legs and if you go digging around the right places, even a black widow but be thankful you've chosen a place in midtown to stay or this guide could be MUCH longer with some truly serious warnings as Arizona has some serious spiders.
