Probably one of the most photographed buildings in Wales, this historic building ( now a tea room) is just down the road. Tu Hwnt I'r Bont means "Beyond the Bridge" in Welsh.

It was originally built as a private house in 1480 and is actually a lot older than the famous bridge it sits next to. Years later it was used as the local courthouse.

The building is now owned by the National Trust and is run as a tea room. It's open every day during the summer season, weekends only later in the season and is closed over the winter when it is at risk of flooding from the river Conwy that flows close by.

The famous scones - the recipe is a jealously guarded secret

Perfect for light lunches and afternoon teas. With a wide range of home made cakes available you'll be spoiled for choice. It does get very busy as it's tiny inside but there is additional seating outside with lovely views of the bridge and river.

Our guests recommend Tŷ Hyll ( the Ugly House) which is also a National Trust tea room. One even said that they preferred it to Tu Hwnt I'r Bont which is high praise indeed. It's a little further away being between Betws y Coed and Capel Curig but still very close.

Serving a similar menu to Tu Hwnt I'r Bont, I've been passed it soooo many times and every time we say that we really must stop and try it. When we do I'll give it a page of it's own. We came very close this summer when we drove up the precipitous lane beside it to visit the Swallow Falls but somehow it didn't happen. One day soon!
