Brookgreen Gardens www.brookgreen.org 843-235-6000

Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark with one of the largest collections of figurative sculpture in an outdoor setting by American artists in the world. The thousands of acres in Brookgreen’s Low Country History and Wildlife Preserve are rich with evidence of the native plants and animals of the South Carolina Low Country as well as the great rice plantations of the 1800’s. www.brookgreen.org

Nearby Huntington State Park boasts a sweeping Grand Strand beach, pristine and wide open, sea-breeze camping and fishing from a jetty or in the surf, and some of the finest bird-watching on the East Coast. Don’t miss the chance to see loggerhead turtles and other endangered plant and animal species up close. The park’s freshwater lake is a sure-fire place to see alligators and sometimes even a mink or two.

Kayak tour (Monday’s at Huntington State Park) - Paddle through spartina cord grass marshes and saltwater creeks from the sandy dunes of Huntington Beach State Park at Murrells Inlet, past mysterious Drunken Jack Island, reputed to hold the treasures of the pirate Blackbeard, and to a fresh water lagoon with alligators basking in the sun.

See bald eagles, osprey, wood stork, herons, egrets, sea turtles, wading shore birds, oyster catchers, maybe even porpoises and sting rays that inhabit the ecotone between sand dunes and maritime forest.

Walk the grounds once visited by Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt, visit the only, fully intact, slave village along the Grand Strand and enjoy unique ecology programs through hikes at the beach, marsh and forests on the grounds of Hobcaw Barony. A 17,500-acre research reserve, Hobcaw Barony is one of the few undeveloped tracts on the Waccamaw Neck. The property includes more than 37 historic buildings and structures representative of the eras of both 18th- and 19th-century rice cultivation and 20th-century winter retreats. Hobcaw Barony, located at 22 Barony Road in Georgetown, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Public access is limited to guided tours and programs.

The 2500 acres of Huntington Beach State Park ( right hand side of Highway 17 just north of Litchfield by the Sea) hold a rich bounty of Grand Strand treasures. Some do visit Huntington Beach State Park just to enjoy the beautiful and uncrowded beach. You can also camp, tour Atalaya, fish, and explore nature. Once here you might be able to see alligators or a few of the hundreds of bird species that use the park.

TIP - check out Atalaya. This was the Huntington’s winter home.
